FIFA World Cup 2026: Spain rises from slumber with 4-0 win, African teams impress with wins, draws

Day 11 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered a spectacular mix of commanding victories, historic milestones, and hard-fought stalemates across Groups G and H.

 Spain 4 – 0 Saudi Arabia (Group H)

Spain bounced back in style at the Atlanta Stadium, dismantling Saudi Arabia with an emphatic 4-0 victory to turbocharge their campaign. Having been held to a scoreless draw in their opening fixture, the European champions found their cutting edge early on. Lamine Yamal marked his return to the starting lineup by opening the floodgates in the 10th minute. Spain's dominance was quickly reinforced by Mikel Oyarzabal, who  struck a quickfire brace with goals in the 21st and 24th minutes to put the game out of reach before halftime. Just four minutes into the second half, a defensive mishap resulted in an own goal by Saudi Arabia's Hassan Altambakti, wrapping up a flawless performance for Spain.

New Zealand 1 – 3 Egypt (Group G)

Egypt etched their names into the history books at BC Place Vancouver, securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory with a thrilling 3-1 comeback against New Zealand. The All Whites initially stunned the Pharaohs when Finn Surman found the back of the net in the 15th minute to give New Zealand an early lead. Egypt adjusted at halftime and launched a furious second-half assault, successfully restoring parity in the 58th minute. The clinical Egyptian attack proved too much to handle, as goals from Mohamed Salah, Mostafa Zico, and Trezeguet completed the turnaround and put Egypt in a prime position to reach the knockout rounds.

Uruguay 2 – 2 Cape Verde (Group H)

A dramatic 2-2 thriller unfolded at Miami Stadium as tournament debutants Cape Verde continued their fairytale run by holding powerhouse Uruguay. Cape Verde shocked the two-time world champions when Kevin Pina rifled home a spectacular effort, marking the nation's first-ever goal on the World Cup stage. Uruguay responded with championship pedigree right on the stroke of halftime, scoring twice in rapid succession through Maximiliano Araujo and Agustin Agustin Canobbio to pull ahead 2-1. Refusing to back down, the African archipelago fought back tenaciously in the second half, with Helio Varela netting just after the hour mark to salvage a well-deserved point and preserve their unbeaten status.

Belgium 0 – 0 Iran (Group G)

Over at the Los Angeles Stadium, a stuttering Belgium side was left frustrated once again after playing out a tense, physical 0-0 draw against a highly disciplined Iran. The star-studded Belgian team struggled to find creative openings against a robust Iranian low block. Belgium's uphill battle became even steeper in the 67th minute when defender Nathan Ngoy was shown a straight red red card for a last-man foul. Down to ten men, Belgium had to settle for a single point, leaving them with just two points from their opening two matches and needing a must-win result in their final group game
