FIFAWC26 : Co-Host USA off to a rousing start with 4-1 win over Paraguay, Canada - Bosnia locked 1-1

The second day of the FIFA World Cup 2026 belonged to the co-host nations as Canada and the United States launched their campaigns in front of passionate home crowds. While Canada had to battle back to salvage a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United States produced a commanding performance to defeat Paraguay and make an early statement in Group D.

Canada 1–1 Bosnia and Herzegovina

Group B – Toronto

Canada's long-awaited opening match on home soil began amid a carnival atmosphere in Toronto, but Bosnia and Herzegovina threatened to spoil the party with a disciplined and determined display.

The visitors struck first in the 21st minute. Bosnia launched a swift attacking move down the flank before a precise delivery into the penalty area found Jovo Lukic, who calmly finished beyond the Canadian goalkeeper to score Bosnia's first goal of the tournament. The strike stunned the home crowd and gave Bosnia a valuable lead.

Canada gradually increased the pressure. Jonathan David repeatedly threatened the Bosnian defence, while Richie Laryea's overlapping runs created numerous openings. Bosnia, however, defended heroically, with veteran defender Sead Kolasinac producing several crucial interventions.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 78th minute. Substitute Cyle Larin, introduced only moments earlier, made an immediate impact. A clever move through midfield opened space on the right and the ensuing cross found Larin inside the area. The striker guided a clinical finish into the net, sending the Toronto crowd into raptures. Remarkably, the goal came barely two minutes after he entered the field.

Canada pressed relentlessly for a winner during the closing stages, but Bosnia held firm to secure a valuable point. The 1-1 draw earned Canada the first World Cup point in the nation's history while Bosnia demonstrated their resilience under immense pressure.

Match Summary

Canada 1 (Larin 78') Bosnia and Herzegovina 1 (Lukic 21')

United States 4–1 Paraguay

Group D – Los Angeles

The night session witnessed one of the most impressive performances of the tournament so far as the United States overwhelmed Paraguay 4-1 in front of a roaring home crowd.

The Americans started aggressively and were rewarded with an early breakthrough. Quick passing through midfield released the attack, and the opening goal arrived after sustained pressure inside the Paraguayan penalty area. The goal ignited the stadium and gave the hosts complete control of proceedings.

Paraguay attempted to respond with their trademark physical approach, but the United States continued to attack at pace. A second goal before halftime doubled the advantage and reflected the hosts' dominance in possession and chance creation.

The South Americans briefly threatened a comeback after pulling a goal back early in the second half, raising hopes of a dramatic contest. However, the United States quickly restored their two-goal cushion with a devastating counterattack that sliced through the Paraguayan defence.

As Paraguay pushed forward in search of another goal, spaces appeared at the back. The Americans exploited them ruthlessly, adding a fourth goal late in the match to complete a memorable 4-1 victory and move to the top of Group D.

The emphatic win immediately boosted expectations around Mauricio Pochettino's side and established the United States as one of the early teams to watch in the competition.

United States 4-1 Paraguay

Group D – Los Angeles Stadium, Los Angeles

In front of a sold-out crowd of more than 70,000 spectators, the United States produced one of the finest World Cup performances in its history, overwhelming Paraguay 4-1 and announcing itself as a serious contender in the tournament.

The hosts came flying out of the blocks and were rewarded inside the opening ten minutes. A dangerous American attack down the flank created chaos in the Paraguayan penalty area, and under pressure defender Damián Bobadilla inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net. The unfortunate own goal handed the United States a dream start and sent the home supporters into celebration.

Buoyed by the early breakthrough, the Americans continued to dominate possession and attack with confidence. Christian Pulisic orchestrated play superbly, while Malik Tillman repeatedly found pockets of space behind the Paraguayan midfield. Their pressure yielded a second goal midway through the first half when Folarin Balogun finished a flowing move with a composed strike beyond the goalkeeper. The goal capped a spell of sustained American superiority.

Paraguay struggled to contain the relentless movement of the American forwards and, deep into first-half stoppage time, the hosts struck again. Tillman delivered the decisive pass and Balogun timed his run perfectly before firing home his second goal of the evening. The stadium erupted as the United States entered halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead. Balogun became the first American player since 1930 to score twice in a World Cup match.

The second half saw Paraguay show greater urgency. Miguel Almirón and Julio Enciso began to influence proceedings and forced the American defence onto the back foot. Their improvement was rewarded in the 73rd minute when Maurício finished off an attack after being supplied by Enciso. The goal briefly raised hopes of a comeback and reduced the deficit to 3-1.

However, the United States never lost control of the contest. Mauricio Pochettino's side continued to create chances and looked dangerous every time they surged forward. In stoppage time, substitute Gio Reyna put the finishing touches on a memorable evening. After an incisive attacking move, Reyna struck past the Paraguayan goalkeeper in the 98th minute to make it 4-1 and complete a dominant performance.

The final whistle confirmed a historic victory. The four goals represented the highest scoring output by the United States in a men's World Cup match, while Balogun's brilliant brace earned him widespread acclaim as the standout performer of the night.
