India whitewash Afghanistan 3-0 in ODI series, Gill player of the series

 


The just-concluded three-match ODI series between India and Afghanistan in June 2026 delivered an exhibition of absolute dominance by the Men in Blue, resulting in a historic 3-0 clean sweep on home soil. Led by captain Shubman Gill, a heavily refreshed Indian line-up meticulously outclassed the visiting Afghan team across three distinct venues. While Afghanistan showcased flashes of individual brilliance and fighting spirit, they simply lacked the collective depth and adaptability required to withstand India’s relentlessly clinical execution in all three facets of the game. 


The series opener at the picturesque Dharamshala was dramatically altered by inclement weather, forcing a lightning-fast, action-packed 25-overs-a-side contest. Afghanistan were sent in to bat and rode on a breathtaking, explosive century from opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who tore the Indian bowling attack apart with a sensational 102 off just 51 balls. Despite Gurbaz's fireworks, Indian debutant Gurnoor Brar bowled an exceptionally clever spell to pick up vital wickets, finishing with impressive figures of 3/27 in 4.5 overs to bowl Afghanistan out for 194 in 24.5 overs. India’s chase was a masterclass in composed aggression, spearheaded by a sublime, unbeaten 84 off 66 balls* from skipper Shubman Gill, who steered the hosts to a comfortable 7-wicket victory with 13 balls to spare. 


Moving to the sweltering heat of Lucknow for the second ODI, India put on an absolute batting clinic, amassing a monumental, record-threatening total of 402 runs. After being asked to bat first, India's top order capitalized beautifully on a flat track, headlined by a spectacular, match-defining 224-run partnership for the third wicket. The elegant Shubman Gill oozed sheer class, compiling a majestic 154 off 110 balls (packed with 22 boundaries and 2 sixes), while a dynamic Ishan Kishan provided the explosive fireworks with a fierce, destructive 125 off just 79 balls. Faced with an astronomical mountain to climb and missing key players due to injuries, Afghanistan's response was flat and devoid of genuine urgency; despite a resilient 79 off 89 balls from Rahmat Shah, the visitors were bundled out for 232, handing India a crushing 170-run victory and an unassailable series lead. 


The final encounter at the iconic Chepauk stadium in Chennai followed a similarly dominant script, culminating in a ruthless 9-wicket triumph for India. Opting to bat first, Afghanistan struggled severely against a relentless opening spell by Prasidh Krishna, who breathed absolute fire to register a magnificent, career-best maiden five-wicket haul of 5/23 in 8.2 overs. A gritty, lone-warrior effort from Afghan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, who scored a meticulous maiden ODI century of 102 off 131 balls, somehow dragged his side to a respectable 218. However, the target proved to be a mere walk in the park for the hosts, as a blistering, unbeaten 110 off 86 balls* from the prodigiously talented Yashasvi Jaiswal, complemented by a vintage, polished 79 off 69 balls from Rohit Sharma, saw India gallop home in just 28.4 overs to complete the comprehensive whitewash.
