WT20IWC26 : Australia dominate , Scotland get historic win, West Indies beat New Zealand in a thriller

Day 2 of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 provided a blend of history, dominance and drama. Scotland secured their first-ever World Cup victory, six-time champions Australia dismantled South Africa with a clinical all-round display, and West Indies stunned defending champions New Zealand thanks to one of the greatest innings ever played in a Women's T20 World Cup chase.

Match 1: Scotland Women beat Ireland Women by 40 runs

Scotland 161/5 (20 overs)

Ireland 121 all out (19.1 overs)

Scotland announced themselves on the global stage with a landmark victory built around the brilliance of captain Kathryn Bryce and her sister Sarah Bryce.

After Scotland slipped to 26/2, the Bryce sisters completely changed the complexion of the match. Kathryn played a magnificent innings of 60 from just 39 balls while Sarah narrowly missed a half-century with 49 from 35 deliveries. Their partnership of 106 runs for the third wicket was the highest stand of the tournament so far and took Scotland from a position of danger to complete control.

Kathryn's innings contained a series of authoritative boundaries through the off side, while Sarah's calm strokeplay ensured the momentum never dipped. Ava Canning was Ireland's best bowler with 3/27 but received little support.

Ireland began the chase positively through Amy Hunter, who struck 39 from 36 balls. Orla Prendergast added 33 from 23 deliveries and briefly threatened to revive the chase. However, Scotland's spinners produced the decisive phase of the contest.

Kirstie Gordon ripped through the middle order with 3/16 while Katherine Fraser matched her with 3/19. Kathryn Bryce completed a superb all-round performance with figures of 2/19. Ireland lost wickets regularly and were eventually bowled out for 121.

Key Performances

Kathryn Bryce: 60 (39) and 2/19

Sarah Bryce: 49 (35)

Partnership: 106 runs for third wicket

Kirstie Gordon: 3/16

Katherine Fraser: 3/19

Amy Hunter: 39 (36)

Orla Prendergast: 33 (23)

Match Analysis

The difference lay in the middle overs. Scotland scored freely through the Bryce partnership while Ireland lost wickets in clusters against spin. Scotland's superior execution under pressure transformed a competitive contest into a comprehensive victory.

Match 2: Australia Women beat South Africa Women by 65 runs

Australia 172/8 (20 overs)

South Africa 107 all out (16.4 overs)

Australia delivered the most complete performance of the tournament thus far and reminded everyone why they remain favourites for another world title.

Their innings began disastrously when Georgia Voll fell for a duck in the opening over. South Africa sensed an opportunity, but Phoebe Litchfield produced a breathtaking counterattack that changed the match.

Litchfield smashed 50 from only 24 deliveries, striking nine fours and one six. She attacked every South African bowler and lifted Australia's scoring rate above nine runs an over almost single-handedly. Her half-century came at a strike rate of 208.33 and laid the foundation for the eventual total.

Veteran Ellyse Perry then anchored the innings with a composed 36, Wareham scored a quickfire 32(22)  while Annabel Sutherland added a useful 21. Australia repeatedly rebuilt after losing wickets and finished on a formidable 172/8. For South Africa, Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout bowler with 2/22 from four overs.

The chase unravelled almost immediately.

Captain Sophie Molineux made an aggressive tactical move by opening with spin. The decision paid off as South Africa lost Sune Luus and Annerie Dercksen inside the first two overs. From that point onwards Australia's spin quartet completely took over.

Laura Wolvaardt fought valiantly with 44 from 39 balls and Nadine de Klerk contributed a brisk 25, but they received little support. Marizanne Kapp briefly threatened with 12 from 6 balls before being run out at a crucial moment.

Georgia Wareham produced a Player-of-the-Match performance. The leg-spinner claimed three wickets and removed key batters whenever South Africa looked capable of building momentum. Alongside Wareham, Ashleigh Gardner, Alana King and Sophie Molineux strangled the batting lineup. Australia bowled South Africa out for just 107 in 16.4 overs.

Key Performances

Phoebe Litchfield: 50 (24), 9 fours, 1 six

Ellyse Perry: 36

Annabel Sutherland: 21

Georgia Wareham: 3 wickets ,32 runs and Player of the Match

Sophie Molineux: 2/17

Laura Wolvaardt: 44 (39)

Nadine de Klerk: 25

Nonkululeko Mlaba: 2/22

Match Analysis

The game turned during Litchfield's explosive innings. Australia scored at over ten runs per over during her stay at the crease, giving their bowlers a large cushion. South Africa then found themselves facing perhaps the strongest spin attack in the competition. Australia's spinners claimed eight wickets between them and never allowed the required rate to come under control. It was a statement victory from a side that appears exceptionally balanced in all departments.

Match 3: West Indies Women beat New Zealand Women by 7 wickets

New Zealand 162/6 (20 overs)

West Indies 163/3 (19.5 overs)

The match of the day produced the biggest upset of the tournament.

Defending champions New Zealand posted what looked a competitive total after recovering from early setbacks. Brooke Halliday top-scored with 40 while wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze made 39. Their partnership rebuilt the innings and placed New Zealand on course for a score beyond 170.

However, West Indies pace bowler Aaliyah Alleyne delivered a match-defining spell. She finished with four wickets and crucially removed both Halliday and Gaze just when New Zealand seemed poised for a late assault. Her figures prevented New Zealand from reaching a much bigger total.

Chasing 163, West Indies required the second-highest successful chase in Women's T20 World Cup history. What followed was a knock for the ages.

Shemaine Campbelle, a veteran of more than 17 years in international cricket, produced a career-best unbeaten 90 from 62 deliveries. Her innings included seven fours and three sixes and became the highest individual score ever made while batting second in a Women's T20 World Cup.

The innings was a masterclass in pacing a chase. Campbelle rotated strike brilliantly against the spinners before targeting the seamers in the final overs. Whenever New Zealand threatened to regain control, she found a boundary.

The defining phase came late in the chase. West Indies needed acceleration and Campbelle responded with calculated aggression, helping score 13 runs from the 18th over and 10 from the 19th. By the final over, only four runs were required. West Indies crossed the line with one ball remaining, sparking emotional celebrations.

Key Performances

Shemaine Campbelle: 90* (62), 7 fours, 3 sixes

Aaliyah Alleyne: 4 wickets

Brooke Halliday: 40

Izzy Gaze: 39

Successful chase: 163, second-highest in Women's T20 World Cup history

Campbelle's 90*: highest individual score batting second in Women's T20 World Cup history

Match Analysis

Aaliyah Alleyne's four wickets kept New Zealand to a chaseable score, but Campbelle's innings ultimately defined the contest. It combined power, experience and remarkable composure under pressure. For New Zealand, missed opportunities in the field proved costly. For West Indies, the victory could become one of the defining moments of their tournament.

Day 2 Verdict

While Scotland's historic maiden World Cup victory was a major headline and Australia's destruction of South Africa reinforced their title credentials, the image that will endure from Day 2 is Shemaine Campbelle walking off unbeaten on 90 after producing one of the greatest run-chases in Women's T20 World Cup history. Australia looked the strongest team, Scotland celebrated a landmark moment, but Campbelle delivered the performance of the tournament so far.
