FIFAWC26 : England starts fluently ,Portugal held , Wins for Ghana, Columbia
The seventh day of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered a thrilling slate of matches across Group K and Group L, featuring unexpected stalemates, heavyweights going toe-to-toe, and clinical attacking displays.
Group K: Stalemate in Houston and Colombian Dominance
Portugal 1 – 1 DR Congo
Portugal’s Group K campaign opened with a frustrating draw against a resilient DR Congo side at Houston Stadium. The European powerhouse looked primed for a commanding night when they took the lead in just the 6th minute. Pedro Neto drifted a precise cross into the penalty area, allowing João Neves to execute a perfect header from 15 meters out to make it 1-0. However, despite controlling the tempo, Portugal struggled to create clear-cut chances and failed to register another shot on target for the rest of the match. DR Congo, appearing in their first World Cup since 1974, steadily worked their way back into the match. Deep into first-half stoppage time (45+5'), they found their equalizer when Yoane Wissa was left completely unmarked at the back post during a corner kick, powering his header past the Portuguese goalkeeper. The second half was a tense affair; Cristiano Ronaldo, making a record-breaking sixth World Cup appearance, missed two close-range opportunities, while Congo’s Cédric Bakambu rattled the woodwork, leaving both sides to share the points.
Uzbekistan 1 – 3 Colombia
Colombia took early control of Group K with a convincing victory over tournament debutants Uzbekistan at Mexico City Stadium. The South American side opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Daniel Muñoz found the back of the net after a fluid team move. Uzbekistan refused to back down and historical history was made in the 60th minute when Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored their first-ever World Cup goal to equalize. The parity was short-lived, however, as Colombia’s star winger Luis Díaz restored his team's advantage only five minutes later in the 65th minute with a clinical finish. As Uzbekistan pushed forward for another equalizer late in the game, Colombia capitalized on the counter-attack, with Jaminton Campaz striking deep in stoppage time (90+9') to seal a 3-1 victory.
Group L: High-Scoring Thriller and Late Drama
England 4 – 2 Croatia
In the standout fixture of Day 7, England outclassed familiar rivals Croatia in an entertaining six-goal thriller in Dallas. Thomas Tuchel's side showed their attacking intent early, spearheaded by captain Harry Kane, who netted two brilliant first-half goals to put the Three Lions in a commanding position. Croatia fought back valiantly to get themselves on the scoresheet, but England's midfield and attacking depth proved too overwhelming in the second half. Jude Bellingham continued his spectacular international form by driving home England's third goal, before substitute Marcus Rashford added a fourth to put the game out of reach, securing a crucial 4-2 win and sending England to the top of Group L on goal difference.
Ghana 1 – 0 Panama
In the second Group L encounter, Ghana earned a hard-fought and dramatic victory over Panama at Toronto Stadium. For the majority of the match, both teams nullified each other in a tactical cagey battle, with clear scoring opportunities at a premium. Just as the game appeared destined to end in a scoreless stalemate, Ghana broke the deadlock in dramatic fashion. Substitute Caleb Yirenkyi became the hero of the night, latching onto a late chance to score the winning goal and secure a vital 1-0 win for the Black Stars, placing them second in the group standings.
