England vs New Zealand, 1st Test 2026 – Day 1.. bowlers call the shots

A rain-interrupted yet utterly captivating opening day at Lord’s saw bowlers dominate proceedings as 16 wickets tumbled in just 60 overs. After being skittled out for a modest 140, England fought back magnificently with the ball to reduce New Zealand to 61/6 at stumps, leaving the visitors trailing by 79 runs in a dramatic start to the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy series.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and elected to field under overcast skies, a decision that paid immediate dividends. The English batting line-up never truly settled on a lively Lord’s surface offering pronounced seam movement. Debutant Emilio Gay showed early promise but fell for 8, while the rest of the top order struggled against relentless Kiwi bowling.

The lone beacon for England was Harry Brook, who produced a counter-attacking innings of 56 from 71 balls. Brook mixed caution with aggression, striking several elegant boundaries to prevent an even more severe collapse. However, wickets continued to tumble around him as England were bundled out for just 140 in 39.4 overs.

The architect of England's downfall was towering fast bowler Kyle Jamieson. Returning to full fitness, Jamieson generated awkward bounce and movement to claim a superb 5 for 62. He was ably supported by Nathan Smith (3/38) and Will O'Rourke (2/25), ensuring England never gained momentum.

If New Zealand expected a comfortable passage to stumps, England's bowlers had other ideas. The hosts unleashed a ferocious response led by returning seamer Ollie Robinson. In one of the most memorable spells seen at Lord's in recent years, Robinson struck three times in a sensational maiden over, ripping through the heart of the Black Caps' batting order. He had Conway lbw , then Williamson caught at short lèg and finally Rachin lbw in a sensational burst .

Blundell was bowled by a beauty from Tongue & Mitchell (12) left one to be bowled.

Robinson finished the day with remarkable figures of 4 for 10 from six overs, while Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson chipped in with crucial wickets. New Zealand's accomplished batting unit was left reeling at 61/6 as the ball continued to seam extravagantly.

Amid the carnage, Glenn Phillips displayed admirable resistance. The aggressive all-rounder remained unbeaten on 31, playing positively while wickets fell around him, and will carry New Zealand's hopes into the second day.

Scores at Stumps – Day 1

England: 140 all out (39.4 overs)

Harry Brook 56

Kyle Jamieson 5/62

Nathan Smith 3/38

New Zealand: 61/6 (19.2 overs)

Glenn Phillips 31*

Ollie Robinson 4/10

New Zealand trail by 79 runs with four first-innings wickets remaining.

With the pitch offering abundant assistance to the seamers and both batting line-ups already exposed, the Test is poised for a thrilling second day. England hold the psychological advantage after their spirited comeback, but one substantial partnership from Phillips and the lower order could quickly swing the contest back in New Zealand's favour.
