World Champs Australia women Begin in Style, Crush New Zealand by 89 Runs

Australia announced their arrival at the Women’s ODI World Cup in emphatic fashion, thrashing New Zealand by 89 runs in their tournament opener on Indian soil. The reigning champions extended their staggering dominance over the Kiwis, notching up a 16th consecutive ODI victory against them. The star of the day was the ever-reliable and flamboyant Ashleigh Gardner, whose scintillating century rescued Australia from early jitters and set the stage for a commanding win. New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine too fought valiantly with a brilliant hundred of her own, but her lone effort was not enough to change the outcome.

At Indore, Australia won the toss and opted to bat on a compact ground with a lightning-fast outfield that made life tough for bowlers. Openers Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield launched with aggressive intent, but Healy (19) fell after a brisk start. Litchfield (45) and the composed Ellyse Perry (33) added stability, but their partnership was broken by Amelia Kerr, sparking a middle-order collapse. With Annabel Sutherland and Beth Mooney falling in quick succession, Australia slipped to 128/5 despite a strong scoring rate.

Then came Gardner’s masterclass. Unfazed by the pressure, she unleashed a breathtaking counterattack, peppering the boundary with authority. Exploiting the short dimensions of the ground, Gardner hammered an explosive 115 off just 83 balls, laced with 16 fours and a towering six. Her partnerships with Tahlia McGrath (26) and Kim Garth (38) steadied the innings further, guiding Australia to a formidable total. Though they couldn’t bat out the full quota of overs, they were bowled out for 326 — a total more than competitive. For New Zealand, Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu impressed with 3 wickets each, while Bree Illing and Amelia Kerr picked up two apiece.

Chasing 327, New Zealand’s hopes evaporated almost immediately with the dismissals of openers Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer for ducks. Captain Sophie Devine staged a lone fight with a magnificent 112, blending resilience with flair, but lacked meaningful support from the rest. Amelia Kerr (33), Brooke Halliday (28), Maddy Green (20) and Isabella Gaze (28) all got starts but failed to convert them into substantial scores. Regular wickets in the middle overs ensured New Zealand never recovered momentum. Once Devine departed, so did all hopes, and the Kiwis folded for 237 in 43.2 overs.

Australia’s bowlers complemented Gardner’s brilliance with discipline and bite. Sophie Molineux and Annabel Sutherland claimed 3 wickets each, while Alana King chipped in with 2 scalps.

This was not just a win but a statement — Australia reminded the cricketing world why they are the undisputed champions, beginning their campaign with authority, class, and sheer dominance.
