Pakistan on Top as South Africa Struggle After Rizwan-Salman Fifties & Nauman’s Spin Burst

South Africa found themselves under pressure at the end of Day 2 in the first Test against Pakistan, trailing by 162 runs after a shaky batting display in Lahore. In reply to Pakistan’s first-innings total of 378, the Proteas reached 216 for 6 at stumps, with Tony de Zorzi (81*) and Senuran Muthusamy holding the fort.

While runs dried up for Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam, he made his mark in the field with a spectacular catch at slip. Diving full length to his right, Babar pulled off a stunning grab to dismiss Ryan Rickelton for 71, ending a promising 94-run third-wicket stand with De Zorzi. That partnership had been South Africa’s only substantial resistance of the innings so far.

Earlier, opener Aiden Markram managed only 20 before falling to left-arm spinner Nauman Ali, who caused plenty of problems for the visiting batters. Wiaan Mulder (17), Tristan Stubbs (8), Dewald Brevis (0), and Kyle Verreynne (2) all departed cheaply as Nauman finished the day with impressive figures of 4 for 85. Salman Agha and Sajid Khan chipped in with one wicket each.

Pakistan’s innings earlier in the day was anchored by overnight batters Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha, who extended their partnership in the morning session. Rizwan made a fluent 75, striking two fours and two sixes, while Salman narrowly missed a century, dismissed for 93 that included five fours and three sixes. The tail failed to contribute much .

For South Africa, left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy was the standout performer, claiming six wickets for 117 runs — his best Test figures — to keep Pakistan’s total within reach. However, with six wickets already down and the deficit still significant, the Proteas face an uphill task to claw their way back into the contest.
