South Africa Crush England to Reach Their First Women’s ODI World Cup Final, Wolvaardt , Kapp shines
South Africa created history by storming into their first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup final, defeating defending champions England by a massive 125 runs in Guwahati. Led by captain Laura Wolvaardt and all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, the Proteas outplayed England in all departments to seal their place in the title clash.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt’s decision backfired as South Africa’s batters made full use of the batting-friendly surface. Leading from the front, skipper Laura Wolvaardt played a sensational captain’s knock of 169 off 143 balls, laced with 20 fours and 4 sixes — the highest individual score in a World Cup knockout by a captain. Right from the start the South African skipper waa timing her drives and flicks to perfection as the runs flowed from her bat with typical elegance as she forged a fine 100 plus run opening stand with Tazmin Brits .
Opener Tazmin Brits provided solid support with 45 off 65 balls, while Kapp contributed a quick 42 off 33 deliveries during the mid innings to increase the tempo , striking four boundaries and a six. Chloe Tryon’s unbeaten 33 off 26 balls and Nadine de Klerk’s 11* off 6 ensured South Africa crossed the 300-mark, finishing at 319 for 7 in their 50 overs. There were periods during the innings when England looked like gaining the upper hand but Wolvaardt was in full control .
For England, Sophie Ecclestone was the most successful bowler, claiming 4 wickets for 44 runs. Lauren Bell took 2 for 55, and Nat Sciver-Brunt picked up one wicket for 67.
Chasing 320 for victory, England’s innings fell apart early under the fiery spell of Marizanne Kapp. The pacer ripped through the top order, taking 3 wickets within the first 7 balls of the innings to leave England reeling at 1 for 3. Kapp was getting good inswing as she bowled Jones & Knight while Khaka dismissed Boumont . From that moment, South Africa’s victory seemed inevitable.
England briefly recovered through a 107-run fourth-wicket partnership between Sciver-Brunt (64 off 76 balls) and Alice Capsey (50 off 71). Sciver had a life and she was slowly reviving England when Kapp coming back for her 2nd spell had the English captain caught behind to seal the match . Later, Danni Wyatt-Hodge added a brisk 34 off 31, but wickets continued to tumble from the other end.
Kapp finished with a magnificent 5 for 20, while Nadine de Klerk took 2 for 24. Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba, and Suné Luus picked up one wicket each as England were bowled out for 194 in 42.3 overs.
With this commanding win, South Africa not only reached their maiden Women’s ODI World Cup final but also sent a strong message to their next opponents — they are ready to make history.
