Sutherland, Gardner power Australia to convincing win over England women in World cup

Unstoppable Australia — they look every bit the champions they are. With both their all-rounders in destructive form, England learned just how hard it is to stop this Australian side. Even without captain Alyssa Healy, Australia crushed England by six wickets. Ashleigh Gardner scored her second century of the tournament, while Annabel Sutherland fell just short on 98. Their dominant partnership powered Australia to victory with nearly 10 overs to spare, cementing their place at the top of the World Cup points table — and it now seems almost impossible to dislodge them from there.

At one point, it looked like England might be the only team capable of troubling Australia in this tournament. They began strongly — openers Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont scored briskly, putting the Australian bowlers under pressure. But when the frontline bowlers had an off day, the all-rounders stepped up. Sutherland and Gardner turned the game around. Sutherland removed Jones for 18 and later dismissed Beaumont, who top-scored for England with 78.

The pair’s efforts triggered a collapse in the middle overs as wickets fell regularly. The two top England batters Knight (20) & skipper Nat Sciver (7) failed . In the lower order Capsey (38) , Dean (26) & Dunkley (22) managed some runs. Gardner also picked up wickets, while spinners Sophie Molineux and Alana King joined the act, keeping the run rate in check. England could only manage 244 for 9 in their 50 overs. Sutherland finished with 3 wickets, Gardner and Molineux took 2 each, and King claimed 1.

Chasing 245, Australia had a shaky start. With Healy absent, Georgia Voll opened alongside Phoebe Litchfield, but both fell cheaply — Litchfield for 1 and Voll for 6. Experienced Ellyse Perry made just 13, and Beth Mooney was dismissed for 20. At 68 for 4, Australia appeared in trouble. But from there, Sutherland and Gardner took full control, ensuring there were no further hiccups.

While Sutherland initially played the anchor role, Gardner unleashed her attacking instincts from the outset. Having already scored a century earlier in the tournament batting at No. 6, she repeated the feat — becoming the first woman to score multiple ODI centuries from that position. Her innings featured 16 boundaries.

As the game progressed, the pressure mounted on England, but the Australian pair remained calm, aware that the target wasn’t steep. At one stage, it became a friendly race between the two to reach the century mark. Gardner got there first, reaching her hundred off just 69 balls — the fastest century in Women’s World Cup history. Sutherland missed out narrowly, finishing unbeaten on 98, as Australia stormed to another emphatic win.
