Nat Sciver reigns supreme as England outplay Sri Lanka in womens world cup

England climbed to the top of the Women’s World Cup points table after registering their third consecutive victory. On Saturday, they defeated Sri Lanka by 89 runs in Colombo, delivering an all-round performance with both bat and ball. It was a thoroughly deserved win for the English side. Nat Sciver-Brunt, who struck a century, was named Player of the Match, while Sophie Ecclestone destroyed Sri Lanka’s batting order with four wickets. England posted 253/9 after opting to bat first, before bowling out Sri Lanka for 164.

Sri Lanka had won the toss and decided to bowl first. England made a cautious start, scoring steadily but losing two wickets during the powerplay, which slowed their scoring rate. Amy Jones (11) and Tammy Beaumont (32) departed before the team crossed 50. Skipper Heather Knight (29) built a 60-run partnership with Sciver-Brunt for the third wicket.

Although Sri Lanka kept taking wickets at regular intervals, they couldn’t dislodge the resolute Sciver-Brunt. Apart from the stand with Knight, she also built smaller partnerships with Sophia Dunkley (18), Emma Lamb (13), and Charlie Dean (19). Sciver-Brunt was eventually dismissed after a brilliant knock of 117 off 117 balls, hitting nine fours and two sixes. It was her fifth century in World Cups and tenth overall in One-Day Internationals. Notably, she was dropped on three by Prabodhani — a costly mistake that proved crucial in Sri Lanka’s defeat. Inoka Ranaweera was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka, taking 3 for 33.

England’s spinners have been in top form throughout the tournament, and the slow Colombo pitch was always going to favour them. Sri Lanka struggled to score freely and relied on singles to keep the scoreboard ticking, but the introduction of Ecclestone in the 19th over turned the game on its head. She ran through the middle order, reducing Sri Lanka to tatters. At one point, her figures read 7 overs, 3 maidens, 6 runs, and 4 wickets. She finished with 4 for 17 in 10 overs. Sciver-Brunt and Charlie Dean chipped in with two wickets apiece. Hasini Perera was Sri Lanka’s top scorer with 35.
