Pakistan Collapse as Bangladesh Cruise to 7 wkt Win in Women’s World Cup Opener

Pakistan endured a nightmare start to their Women’s World Cup campaign, crashing to a disappointing defeat in their very first match. Fatima Sana’s side was humbled by Bangladesh, who outplayed them in all departments to secure a dominant seven-wicket victory. The defeat now leaves Pakistan under pressure as they prepare to face India on Sunday.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Pakistan failed to justify the decision. Their innings never gathered momentum and ended meekly at just 129 runs in 38.3 overs. From the opening over itself, the team was rattled. Bangladesh’s young pace sensation Marufa Akter delivered a stunning double blow, bowling Omaima Sohail and Sidra Ameen off successive deliveries—both dismissed first ball, leaving Pakistan reeling.

A brief partnership followed, as Muneeba Ali (17) and Rameen Shamim (23) tried to steady the innings, adding 42 runs for the third wicket. But spinner Nahida Akter turned the tide again, removing both batters in consecutive overs. With the scoreboard at 47 for 4, Pakistan’s collapse continued. The middle and lower order failed to resist—Aliya Riaz (13), Sidra Nawaz (15), Fatima Sana (22), and Natalia Parvaiz (9) all fell cheaply. None of the batters managed to anchor the innings or stitch together partnerships.

Among Bangladesh’s bowlers, Shorna Akter was the standout performer, claiming three crucial wickets and breaking the spine of Pakistan’s batting order.

Chasing a modest target of 130, Bangladesh’s reply was calm and calculated. Despite early hiccups—losing two wickets for 35 runs—the innings was steadied by a composed partnership between Rubya Haider and captain Nigar Sultana. Rubya played a match-winning knock, scoring an unbeaten 54, while Nigar contributed a patient 23. Together they added 62 runs for the third wicket, effectively taking the game away from Pakistan. Bangladesh eventually crossed the finish line in just 31.1 overs, losing only three wickets along the way.

This clinical victory highlighted Bangladesh’s growing stature in women’s cricket and exposed Pakistan’s fragility under pressure. With India up next, Fatima Sana’s team will need a dramatic turnaround to stay alive in the tournament.
