Bangladesh Women Let Victory Slip as South Africa Pull Off Stunning Comeback in World Cup Thriller

Bangladesh came agonizingly close yet again to a famous win, but their hopes sank at the very edge of glory. After dominating the first half of the match and reducing South Africa to 78 for 5, Nigar Sultana’s team faltered in the crucial moments, allowing the Proteas to snatch a dramatic three-wicket victory in the Women’s World Cup clash at Visakhapatnam.

Chasing 233 for victory, South Africa were in complete disarray early on. Opener Tazmin Brits fell for a duck in the second over, and despite a brief 55-run stand between captain Laura Wolvaardt (31 off 56) and Anneke Bosch (28 off 35), the batting order crumbled under pressure. From 1 for 58, the score nosedived to 78 for 5 in the space of just seven overs, as Bangladesh’s bowlers and fielders tightened their grip.

But the game turned on its head when the experienced Marizanne Kapp and all-rounder Chloe Tryon launched a spirited counterattack. The pair stitched together a resilient 85-run partnership, reviving South Africa’s innings and unsettling a Bangladesh side that had sensed victory. Kapp struck a composed 56 off 71 balls, while Tryon played a fluent and fearless knock of 62 from 69 deliveries, laced with six fours and a six.

Once Tryon departed while chasing quick runs, the onus fell on Nadine de Klerk and Masabata Klaas to finish the job. The duo showed nerves of steel, guiding South Africa home with three balls to spare. De Klerk, dropped off a sitter in the penultimate over , remained unbeaten on 37 off 29 & again like India game sealed the win with a 6 , and Klaas chipped in with a crucial 10 off 13.

For Bangladesh, the defeat was self-inflicted. Their bowlers lost discipline in the final overs, and a series of dropped catches cost them dearly. Left-arm spinner Nahida Akter (2 for 44) was the standout performer but failed to maintain pressure in the closing overs.

Earlier, opting to bat first, Bangladesh posted a competitive 232 for 6 on a slow surface. Their top order laid the foundation with steady partnerships but lacked urgency early on. Openers Fargana Hoque (30 off 76) and Rabeya Haider (25 off 52) added 53, while Sharmin Akhter’s patient 50 from 77 balls steadied the innings.

Captain Nigar Sultana (32 off 42) and young Swarna Akter (an explosive 51* off 35 with three fours and three sixes) accelerated the scoring, lifting Bangladesh past 230. Ritu Moni provided a late flourish with 19 not out from just eight balls.

Among South Africa’s bowlers, Nonkululeko Mlaba impressed with her control, taking 2 for 42 in a disciplined spell.

Despite Bangladesh’s gritty batting and early dominance with the ball, their fielding lapses and erratic bowling in the death overs turned a potential victory into a heartbreaking defeat — their second narrow loss in a row after the England match. It was yet another reminder that, for Bangladesh, composure under pressure remains the missing piece in their World Cup campaign.
