Bangladesh Collapse Shockingly to Lose Against Sri Lanka, Crash Out of World Cup
Bangladesh needed just 12 runs from 12 balls with six wickets in hand. Captain Nigar Sultana was well set, batting past her half-century. Yet, from that position of complete control, Bangladesh suffered an unbelievable collapse — losing five wickets in just seven balls. Four wickets fell in the first four deliveries of the final over, and Bangladesh fell short by seven runs. With this defeat, they became the first team to be eliminated from the World Cup, while Sri Lanka narrowly kept their hopes alive.
The match, played at Navi Mumbai, was the first of this World Cup at the venue. Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu was the star of the game, contributing with both bat and ball. She scored 46 runs before returning with figures of 4 for 42 in her 10 overs. Defending nine runs in the final over, Chamari bowled a sensational spell — claiming three wickets and effecting a run-out in four balls — to seal a dramatic win for Sri Lanka.
Batting first, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 202 in 48.4 overs. Apart from Chamari, Hasini Perera (85) and Nikashi de Silva (37) were the main contributors. At one stage, they looked set for a total above 250, but Hasini’s dismissal slowed the scoring rate dramatically. From 181 for 7 in the 35th over, Sri Lanka could add only 21 runs in the next 14 overs. For Bangladesh, Shorna Akter was the standout bowler with figures of 3 for 27 from 10 overs.
Chasing 203, Bangladesh had a slow and shaky start, losing early wickets. However, a strong 122-run partnership between skipper Nigar Sultana and Sharmin Akhter steadied the innings. Sharmin made a fighting half-century but had to retire hurt on 64 due to cramps. That shifted all the pressure onto Nigar, who kept the chase alive with a composed fifty. But with wickets tumbling at the other end, she was forced to take risks and was dismissed for 77 trying to clear the boundary.
Sharmin couldn’t return to bat, and Bangladesh’s lower order failed to handle the pressure. What looked like an easy win turned into heartbreak as Bangladesh lost from the jaws of victory — ending their World Cup campaign in stunning fashion.
