Pakistan vs South Africa 1st test delicately poised
The first Test between Pakistan and South Africa has become finely poised, with the match likely to be decided on the fourth day. Both teams have a chance to win — South Africa need 226 more runs, while Pakistan require 8 wickets.
In reply to Pakistan’s first-innings total of 378, South Africa were bowled out for 269. Pakistan then struggled in their second innings, managing only 167, setting the visitors a target of 277 for victory. At stumps on Day 3, South Africa were 51 for 2.
The day belonged to the left-arm spinners from both sides. Pakistan’s Nauman Ali took 6 wickets in the first innings, while South Africa’s Senuran Muthusamy claimed 5 in the second.
The 39-year-old Nauman also broke Ravichandran Ashwin’s record to become the oldest bowler to take a six-wicket haul in an innings in the World Test Championship. Ashwin had achieved the feat at age 38 against Bangladesh last year. Nauman had taken 4 wickets on Day 2 and added 2 more on Tuesday, dismantling South Africa’s batting lineup except for Tony de Zorzi, who scored a fighting 104.
Pakistan began their second innings with a lead of 109 but faltered against Muthusamy’s spin. Only Abdullah Shafique (41), Babar Azam (42), and Saud Shakeel (38) made meaningful contributions, as the rest failed to reach 30. Off-spinner Simon Harmer also impressed with 4 wickets. Imam-ul-Haq (0), Shan Masood (7), and Salman Agha (4) fell cheaply.
Chasing 277, South Africa lost Aiden Markram (3) and Wiaan Mulder (0) within 18 runs — both dismissed by Nauman. At the close of play, Ryan Rickelton was unbeaten on 29 alongside Tony de Zorzi on 16, setting up a tense finish for Day 4.
