CT25-26 : PSG Stun Barcelona, Haaland Shines but City Stumble, Arsenal and Newcastle Cruise

Holders Paris Saint-Germain staged a thrilling comeback to edge Barcelona 2-1 with a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the Champions League on Wednesday, while Manchester City were forced to settle for a frustrating draw in Monaco despite a brilliant Erling Haaland double.

It was a night of high drama and emphatic victories across Europe, with Arsenal and Newcastle United enjoying dominant wins, and Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and Qarabag also making strong statements.

At Montjuïc, the much-anticipated clash between Spain’s reigning champions and the French and European title-holders delivered fireworks. Missing the injured Ousmane Dembélé, PSG leaned on their depth. Barcelona struck first in the 19th minute, Marcus Rashford unselfishly teeing up Ferran Torres. Yet Senny Mayulu levelled before the break, and substitute Gonçalo Ramos struck in the 90th minute from Achraf Hakimi’s clever cross, securing PSG’s second consecutive group victory. “It was a great game between two really good sides,” said coach Luis Enrique, hailing his team’s resilience.

Meanwhile, Haaland continued his breathtaking Champions League scoring run, notching twice in the first half to reach 52 goals in just 50 appearances. However, City were pegged back 2-2 in Monaco. Jordan Teze’s thunderbolt and a late Eric Dier penalty — awarded via VAR — denied Pep Guardiola’s men a perfect start. “I don’t know if it was a penalty, but it was given. That’s that,” shrugged Guardiola afterward.

Arsenal remained flawless, dispatching Olympiakos 2-0 in London. Gabriel Martinelli capitalised early after Viktor Gyökeres hit the post, while Bukayo Saka sealed the points in stoppage time with a strike that slipped under goalkeeper Kostas Tzolakis.

Newcastle finally found their rhythm, crushing Union Saint-Gilloise 4-0 away. Nick Woltemade’s deflected opener set the tone, before Anthony Gordon coolly converted two penalties. Harvey Barnes rounded off a commanding display.

Elsewhere, Dortmund — last season’s beaten finalists — dismantled Athletic Bilbao 4-1, with Daniel Svensson, Carney Chukwuemeka, Serhou Guirassy and Julian Brandt all on target. Napoli earned their first European win of the season thanks to Rasmus Højlund’s brace in a 2-1 triumph over Sporting, while Juventus drew 2-2 at Villarreal in an entertaining contest highlighted by Federico Gatti’s acrobatic equaliser.

Bayer Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven shared a 1-1 stalemate, and Qarabag of Azerbaijan continued their fairytale run. After toppling Benfica, they stunned Copenhagen 2-0 in Baku, courtesy of Abdellah Zoubir and Emmanuel Addai.

With two matchdays gone, Qarabag remarkably sit among the elite six perfect starters — alongside Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, PSG, Inter Milan and Arsenal — in what is shaping up to be a captivating Champions League season.
