Rain thwarts Pakistan Women attempt to create huge upset win over England in World cup

Pakistan women had a golden opportunity to register their first-ever win over England, but persistent rain forced them to share points with the four-time champions in their ICC Women’s World Cup clash. Led by captain Fatima Sana’s brilliant four-wicket haul, Pakistan took full advantage of the bounce and movement on offer to restrict England to 133 for 9 in a rain-curtailed 31-overs-a-side contest.

Chasing a revised target of 113 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis system, Pakistan made a steady start as openers Muneeba Ali (9) and Omaima Sohail (19) put up 34 runs without loss in 6.4 overs. However, the rain returned, and despite multiple inspections, play could not resume. The match was eventually abandoned, dashing Pakistan’s hopes of staying alive in the race for the semifinals.

Pakistan remain winless in the tournament, sitting at the bottom of the table with just one point from three losses and this washout. They still have matches left against New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. England, on the other hand, climbed to the top of the standings with seven points — the same as Australia, though England’s superior net run rate (+1.86) gives them the edge over Australia (+1.50). This was the third match of the tournament to be washed out by rain, following the Sri Lanka vs Australia and Sri Lanka vs New Zealand fixtures.

Earlier, Pakistan’s bowlers delivered a strong performance. Fatima Sana took 4 for 27, while left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal claimed 2 for 16. England were reeling at 79 for 7 after 25 overs when rain interrupted play. Following a three-and-a-half-hour delay, the match was shortened to 31 overs per side. Charlotte Dean (33) and Emily Arlott (18) then added 54 runs in the final six overs to help England post a respectable total.

Pakistan had made a perfect start when Diana Baig dismissed Tammy Beaumont in the second over. Fatima Sana then ripped through the top order, removing Amy Jones (8), Nat Sciver-Brunt (4), and captain Heather Knight (18). Sadia Iqbal’s spin later accounted for Emma Lamb and Sophia Dunkley (11), both dismissals confirmed after successful DRS reviews. Rameen Shamim trapped Alice Capsey (16) leg-before soon after. England’s batters struggled to score freely, facing 117 dot balls in total. Charlotte Dean and Emily Arlott struck a few late boundaries, but Dean was dismissed in the final over by Fatima, who completed her fourth wicket of the match.
