Pakistan reach 313/5 on day 1 of 1st Test vs South Africa
Pakistan ended the opening day of the first Test against South Africa in a comfortable position at 313 for 5 in Lahore. Opener Imam-ul-Haq narrowly missed out on a century, falling for 93, just seven runs short of the milestone.
Winning the toss, Pakistan captain Shan Masood opted to bat first on a good-looking Lahore pitch. Despite getting the opportunity to bowl first, the Test World Cup champions South Africa couldn’t make early inroads. Although opener Abdullah Shafique (2) fell cheaply, Imam and Masood steadied the innings with a strong 161-run stand for the second wicket. Imam scored 93, hitting seven fours and one six, while Masood made 76 with nine boundaries and a six.
However, Pakistan suffered a mini-collapse thereafter. Babar Azam managed just 23, while Saud Shakeel was dismissed for a golden duck. From a strong 163 for 1, Pakistan suddenly found themselves struggling at 199 for 5.
South Africa, led by Aiden Markram, failed to capitalize on the breakthrough as former skipper Mohammad Rizwan and white-ball captain Salman Ali Agha steadied the innings with an unbroken 114-run partnership for the sixth wicket. At stumps, Rizwan was unbeaten on 62 and Salman on 52.
Among the South African bowlers, Senuran Muthusamy was the most successful, taking 2 wickets for 101 runs. Kagiso Rabada, Simon Harmer, and Prenelan Subrayen picked up one wicket each.
