IPL2026 : Urvil Patel’s Blazing Fifty Keeps CSK’s Playoff Hopes Alive vs LSG
The start of the IPL season was far from ideal for Chennai Super Kings. Without the presence of MS Dhoni, the five-time champions suffered a hat-trick of defeats early in the campaign. But under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK have scripted a remarkable turnaround. Their latest statement came at Chepauk, where they brushed aside Lucknow Super Giants by five wickets to register a third consecutive victory and storm back into the playoff race.
The architect of Chennai’s thrilling chase was the explosive Urvil Patel, whose breathtaking 13-ball half-century completely dismantled the Lucknow bowling attack. His extraordinary assault not only reignited CSK’s campaign but also piled pressure on Kolkata Knight Riders in the playoff battle. Meanwhile, the defeat effectively ended Lucknow’s hopes of making the knockout stage.
After winning the toss, Gaikwad opted to bowl first, and Lucknow’s innings was powered almost entirely by the sensational Josh Inglis. The Australian wicketkeeper-batter, who joined the side later in the season, finally showcased the firepower Lucknow had been missing. Inglis hammered a stunning 85 off just 33 balls, smashing 10 boundaries and six towering sixes at a staggering strike rate of 257.58.
However, he received little support from the rest of the batting lineup. The much-vaunted top order collapsed under pressure, with Mitchell Marsh scoring 10, Nicholas Pooran dismissed for 1, and Aiden Markram managing only 6. Captain Rishabh Pant continued his disappointing run with a scratchy 15, slowing Lucknow’s momentum considerably.
Just when the innings appeared to be losing direction, Bengal all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed stepped up brilliantly in the finisher’s role. Remaining unbeaten on 43 off 25 balls, Shahbaz ensured Lucknow crossed the 200-run mark and posted a competitive 203. For Chennai, Jamie Overton claimed three wickets, while Anshul Kamboj chipped in with two scalps.
Chasing 204, Chennai got off to a solid start through Gaikwad (42) and Sanju Samson (28), who laid a strong platform at the top. But what followed from Urvil Patel was pure carnage.
After taking a single off the first ball he faced, Urvil launched into a jaw-dropping assault — smashing five consecutive sixes, followed by a boundary and another maximum. He barely allowed the bowlers a moment to recover and raced to a fifty in just 13 deliveries, equalling the record for the fastest half-century in IPL history. His astonishing knock finally ended at 65 off only 23 balls, but by then the game had tilted heavily in Chennai’s favour.
Lucknow briefly clawed their way back through Shahbaz Ahmed’s clever spell and wickets from Avesh Khan and Digvesh Rathi, which removed Dewald Brevis and Karthik Sharma cheaply. However, sloppy fielding proved costly as Lucknow dropped crucial catches, including two opportunities offered by Prashant Veer.
Having exhausted most of his bowling resources, Pant was forced to hand the final over to Markram. Shivam Dube seized the opportunity ruthlessly, smashing back-to-back sixes after two wides to seal the victory in emphatic fashion.
With this win, Chennai Super Kings climbed to fifth place on the table with 12 points from 11 matches, overtaking Rajasthan Royals and firmly re-entering the playoff race. On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders remain under pressure with nine points from 10 games. For Lucknow, the defeat was a crushing blow — stranded at the bottom of the table with just six points from 10 matches, their playoff dreams are now mathematically all but over.
