IPL2026 : Samson Masterclass Powers CSK Closer to Playoffs with Win Over Delhi Capitals
Chennai Super Kings boosted their IPL playoff hopes with a convincing victory over Delhi Capitals, thanks to a शानदार knock from Sanju Samson. The Indian T20 World Cup hero returned to form in style, playing a match-winning innings that single-handedly turned the game in Chennai’s favour.
Batting first on Tuesday, Delhi Capitals managed 155/7 in their 20 overs. In response, Chennai chased down the target comfortably, reaching 159/2 in just 17.3 overs to seal an 8-wicket win. With this result, Chennai now have 10 points from 10 matches, strengthening their chances of a playoff berth.
Chasing 156, Chennai didn’t get off to the best start. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (6) and Urvil Patel (17) fell early, putting the team under pressure. However, Sanju Samson steadied the innings and then shifted gears brilliantly. Coming in at No. 4, Kartik Sharma (41* off 31) provided solid support as the duo built a crucial partnership.
Samson took control of the chase, ensuring the required run rate kept dropping steadily. His aggressive stroke play proved too much for the Delhi bowlers to handle. He remained unbeaten on a glorius 87 off 52 balls, smashing 7 fours and 6 sixes. Kartik complemented him well, and together they stitched a match-winning 114-run partnership.
Among Delhi’s bowlers, skipper Axar Patel picked up 1 wicket for 25 runs, while Lungi Ngidi also claimed 1 wicket for 30 runs. Mitchell Starc went wicketless despite conceding 30 runs. T Natarajan proved expensive, giving away 39 runs in 2.3 overs, while Kuldeep Yadav also failed to make an impact.
Earlier, Delhi’s decision to bat first after winning the toss didn’t pay off. Their innings never gained momentum as wickets fell at regular intervals. Reduced to 69/5, they were rescued by Tristan Stubbs and impact substitute Sameer Rizvi, who added 65 runs for the sixth wicket.
Openers Pathum Nissanka (19 off 15) and KL Rahul (12 off 13) failed to convert their starts. Nitish Rana (15), Karun Nair (13), and Axar Patel (2) also couldn’t contribute significantly, struggling against the likes of Noor Ahmad and Mukesh Choudhary.
Stubbs scored 38 off 31 balls, hitting 1 four and 2 sixes, while Rizvi remained unbeaten on 40 off 24 balls, including 4 sixes. In the final overs, Ashutosh Sharma provided a quick cameo of 14 off 5 balls. Mitchell Starc remained unbeaten on 0 at the other end.
For Chennai, Noor Ahmad was the standout bowler with 2 wickets for 22 runs. Jamie Overton (1/5), Akila Hossein (1/19), Gurjapneet Singh (1/29), and Mukesh Choudhary (1/31) chipped in with a wicket each.
Overall, it was a clinical performance from Chennai, highlighted by Samson’s brilliance, as they moved a step closer to securing a place in the IPL playoffs.
