IPL2026 : Delhi Capitals beat KKR by 40 Runs to finish at 6th spot
With Rajasthan Royals sealing the final playoff spot after defeating Mumbai Indians, the clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals became little more than a formality. Even in a dead rubber, however, Kolkata failed to restore pride, suffering a disappointing 40-run defeat to Delhi and ending their forgettable IPL season in seventh place on the points table.
After finishing eighth last season and enduring a six-match winless streak this year, KKR’s struggles continued right till the end. Although the Knights had somehow kept their playoff hopes alive until Sunday, their qualification chances depended on a near-impossible combination of results. Even before the match against Delhi was completed, KKR were officially knocked out after Rajasthan confirmed the final playoff berth. The dejected Kolkata supporters once again left the stadium frustrated as their team failed to deliver in yet another crucial encounter.
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to field first, but the decision quickly backfired. Delhi skipper KL Rahul played a magnificent innings under pressure, smashing 60 off just 30 balls to put his side in control. Abishek Porel struggled for fluency but still contributed 22, while the middle order chipped in with valuable runs.
Axar Patel once again proved to be Delhi’s backbone with a smart and composed 39 off 25 balls. Sahil Parekh added 24, while late fireworks from David Miller and Ashutosh Sharma propelled Delhi to an imposing 203. Miller struck 28, while Ashutosh hammered 18 off just 11 deliveries. Among KKR’s bowlers, only Saurabh Dubey made some impact, picking up two wickets for 28 runs, while the rest struggled badly.
Chasing 204, Rahane did score runs for KKR, but questions will again be raised over his strike rate. In a steep chase, his 63 off 39 balls lacked the urgency required. Worse still, he found little support from the rest of the batting unit. The Kolkata lineup looked completely directionless and fragile under pressure.
Finn Allen made 20 before falling cheaply, while Cameron Green endured another miserable outing, scoring just 2 off 3 balls. Rovman Powell managed 29, but the remaining batters failed to contribute meaningfully. KKR were eventually bowled out for 163 in 18.4 overs, falling 40 runs short of the target.
More than just the margin of defeat, KKR’s campaign exposed deeper flaws — lack of confidence, poor planning, inconsistent execution, questionable captaincy, and repeated batting collapses. The franchise management will undoubtedly have plenty to rethink before next season, especially considering the enormous expectations and emotions of their passionate fan base.
