IPL2026 : Klaasen, Kishan Shine as SRH Seal Playoff Spot; CSK Suffer Another Crushing Blow
Chennai’s final home game of the season turned into a disappointing night for the packed Chepauk crowd. Fans finally got another opportunity to watch MS Dhoni from close quarters, but the evening ended in heartbreak as Sunrisers Hyderabad clinched a crucial victory to confirm their place in the IPL playoffs. With 16 points, Gujarat Titans also secured qualification, leaving five teams fighting for the lone remaining playoff berth.
For Chennai Super Kings, the defeat dealt another severe blow to their fading playoff hopes. Even a win in their final league game may not be enough, as they now depend heavily on other results. The loss, however, significantly boosted the playoff chances of Kolkata Knight Riders.
Batting first after winning the toss, Chennai posted a competitive 180/7, though none of their batters managed a truly dominant innings. Dewald Brevis top-scored with a brisk 44, while Pat Cummins delivered another disciplined spell, claiming 3 wickets for 28 runs.
Chennai began aggressively, with Sanju Samson attacking from the outset. He smashed a six off the very first ball from Nitish Reddy and followed it up with elegant boundaries. But Cummins changed the course of the innings in his very first over, forcing Samson into an edge behind.
Youngster Urvil Patel looked equally fearless, hammering two successive sixes off Cummins before being bowled by a clever slower delivery from Sakib Hussain. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled to accelerate under pressure, managing only 15 from a slow-paced innings. Kartik Sharma’s composed 32 briefly steadied the innings before Cummins returned to remove both Kartik and Gaikwad.
The late surge came from Brevis and Shivam Dube, whose fifth-wicket partnership added valuable momentum. Brevis finally looked in rhythm this season, smashing two fours and four towering sixes during his entertaining knock, while Dube contributed a steady 26. However, Chennai failed to fully capitalize in the death overs.
Hyderabad’s chase also began shakily as Travis Head departed cheaply. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan tried rebuilding before Abhishek fell for 26.
On a sluggish pitch where stroke-making was difficult, Heinrich Klaasen changed the tempo dramatically. His fearless strokeplay alongside Kishan transformed the chase. The pair added a match-defining 75-run stand in just 41 balls for the third wicket, putting Hyderabad firmly in control.
Klaasen was eventually stumped for a blistering 47 off 26 balls, an innings decorated with six boundaries and two sixes. His dismissal briefly slowed Hyderabad’s momentum and gave Chennai faint hope of a comeback.
But Kishan held his nerve brilliantly under pressure. Mixing composure with calculated aggression, he anchored the chase superbly before departing for a crucial 70 late in the innings. By then, Hyderabad were already within touching distance, and the remaining batters calmly completed the chase to seal a memorable playoff-clinching victory.
