IPL2026: Allen, Angkrish Narine Keep KKR’s Playoff Dream Alive with superb win over Gujarat Titans

Kolkata Knight Riders kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a sensational 29-run victory over Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens. Riding on explosive knocks from the “fantastic” Finn Allen and the destructive Angkrish Raghuvanshi, KKR piled up a mammoth 247 before restricting Shubman Gill’s side to 218. Gujarat fought hard till the very end, but the Knight Riders held their nerve to secure two priceless points.

With qualification hopes hanging by a thread, KKR knew every remaining game was a must-win contest. Returning to Eden Gardens after five matches due to state elections, the Knights marked their 100th match at the iconic venue in unforgettable fashion.

After losing the toss, KKR received an early slice of luck when Finn Allen was dropped on 34 shortly after Ajinkya Rahane departed for 14. Gujarat paid heavily for that missed opportunity. Allen unleashed absolute carnage, smashing bowlers all around the park. Rashid Khan, Arshad Khan — no one was spared as the Kiwi batter hammered 93 off just 35 balls, studded with four boundaries and ten towering sixes at a staggering strike rate of 265.71. He eventually fell agonisingly short of a century, caught at the boundary off Sai Kishore.

If Allen set the platform, Angkrish Raghuvanshi turned the innings into a nightmare for Gujarat. The young batter produced a fearless exhibition of strokeplay, reaching his half-century in 33 balls before exploding in the death overs. Raghuvanshi remained unbeaten on a stunning 82 off just 44 deliveries, laced with four fours and seven sixes. Cameron Green also made full use of a reprieve from Arshad Khan to contribute a fluent 52. KKR eventually finished on a colossal 247/2 — their third-highest total in IPL history.

Chasing 248 on a batting-friendly Eden pitch was always going to demand something extraordinary. Gujarat began aggressively through Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, racing to 42 in the first three overs. However, the visitors suffered a setback when Sudharsan was struck on the elbow by a sharp delivery from Kartik Tyagi and had to briefly leave the field.

Sunil Narine then provided the breakthrough by dismissing Nishant Sindhu, courtesy of a brilliant catch from Manish Pandey. Jos Buttler struggled initially to accelerate, leaving much of the responsibility on skipper Gill’s shoulders. The Indian captain once again showcased his class and composure under pressure. Even an injured Varun Chakravarthy, clearly struggling with his fitness, showed immense fighting spirit while bowling through pain. Gill capitalised in one over, smashing 22 runs to tilt momentum briefly towards Gujarat.

But when KKR desperately needed a saviour, Narine delivered yet again. The veteran Caribbean spinner produced the decisive moment of the match by dismissing the dangerous Gill in the 17th over. Gill’s superb 85 off 49 balls, featuring five fours and seven sixes, kept Gujarat alive till then. Special credit also went to Anukul Roy for pulling off a sensational boundary catch under immense pressure.

KKR’s bowlers leaked plenty of runs, while Matheesha Pathirana suffered another injury setback after returning from rehabilitation and bowling only eight deliveries. Yet Narine’s experience once again steadied the ship. Young pacer Saurabh Dubey also played a crucial role, conceding just five runs in the 19th over while dismissing Jos Buttler to virtually seal the contest.

Needing an impossible 40 runs in the final over, Gujarat eventually fell short as KKR sealed a thrilling 29-run victory. The playoff dream may still be difficult, but for now, the Knight Riders and their fans continue to believe.
