IPL2026: Shreyas Iyer’s Magnificent Century Keeps Punjab Kings Alive in Playoff Race

Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh rose to the occasion in Punjab Kings’ do-or-die clash against Lucknow Super Giants, delivering a sensational performance to keep their playoff hopes alive. Shreyas smashed the first IPL century of his career, while Prabhsimran played a fearless knock of 69 as Punjab stormed to a crucial seven-wicket victory with 12 balls to spare.

Punjab had pushed themselves into immense pressure after losing six consecutive matches. Another defeat would have ended their IPL campaign. But when it mattered most, they produced a commanding response. For Lucknow, meanwhile, a nightmare season finally came to an end as they finished at the bottom of the points table.

Punjab’s victory also piled pressure on Kolkata Knight Riders in the race for the final playoff spot.

Batting first at home, Lucknow posted 196/6, but Punjab chased down the target comfortably thanks to a breathtaking partnership between Shreyas and Prabhsimran. Punjab finished the league stage with 15 points from 14 matches and a net run rate of 0.309.

That left Kolkata with a daunting equation. Ajinkya Rahane’s side not only needed to beat Delhi Capitals in their final league game but also had to win by a massive margin to overtake Punjab’s net run rate. If Kolkata batted first and scored 200, they would need to win by at least 77 runs. If chasing 180, they would have to reach the target within 12 to 12.4 overs — effectively winning with 44 to 48 balls remaining.

However, Kolkata’s hopes also depended on Rajasthan Royals losing to Mumbai Indians. A Rajasthan win would seal their playoff qualification and eliminate both Punjab and Kolkata. Only if Rajasthan lost would the net run rate battle between Punjab and Kolkata decide the final playoff berth.

Lucknow were severely weakened before the match, missing Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram due to international commitments. Rishabh Pant’s side entered the contest with only two overseas players. The problems began immediately as opener Arshin Kulkarni departed for a duck, while Nicholas Pooran’s disappointing season ended with another failure as he managed just two runs.

Josh Inglis and Ayush Badoni then revived the innings with aggressive strokeplay. Badoni looked particularly dangerous, smashing 43 off only 18 balls before Yuzvendra Chahal broke the partnership. Pant once again struggled for fluency, scoring a laborious 26 off 22 deliveries.

Inglis held the innings together superbly, anchoring Lucknow’s total with a classy 72 off 44 balls. Abdul Samad added late fireworks with 37 off 20 deliveries as Lucknow finished on 196/6. Yet, even at the halfway mark, the total appeared at least 20 runs short on a good batting surface.

Punjab’s chase suffered an early blow when Mohammed Shami dismissed Priyansh Arya for a duck on the very first ball. Cooper Connolly struck a few attacking shots but fell for 18, again to Shami, leaving Punjab under pressure.

That was when Prabhsimran and Shreyas completely transformed the contest.

Rishabh Pant’s missed opportunity proved decisive. Arjun Tendulkar, playing his first match of the season, forced a mistimed pull from Prabhsimran early in the innings, but Pant dropped a relatively straightforward catch when the batter was on 20. Punjab never looked back after that moment.

Prabhsimran punished Lucknow with a blazing 69 off 39 balls, while Shreyas played the innings of his IPL career. The pair stitched together a match-winning 140-run partnership off just 76 deliveries, dismantling Lucknow’s bowling attack with authority.

Arjun eventually dismissed Prabhsimran with a pinpoint yorker, but by then the damage had already been done.

Lucknow’s biggest bowling weapons, Mohsin Khan and Digvesh Rathi, failed to make an impact as Punjab steadily marched towards victory. Once the target came within reach, Shreyas accelerated even further, fully aware that net run rate could prove decisive in the playoff race.

In a brutal assault on Mohammed Shami, Shreyas smashed three towering sixes in a single over before finishing the match in style with another maximum. That final six not only sealed Punjab’s victory but also brought up his maiden IPL century — a breathtaking hundred off just 51 balls.

On the biggest night of Punjab’s season, their captain delivered a truly unforgettable performance and walked off unbeaten after keeping his team’s playoff dream alive.
