IPL2026 : Gujarat Titans Edge Past Punjab Kings in Last-Over Thriller, Holder 4/29
Chasing a modest target of 164, Gujarat Titans were pushed to the very last over before sealing a four-wicket win against Punjab Kings at Ahmedabad. A composed half-century from Sai Sudharsan and a calm, unbeaten 40 off 23 balls from Washington Sundar guided Gujarat home, as they finished on 164/6 in response to Punjab’s 163/9.
Punjab Kings, after being put in to bat, suffered an early collapse. Mohammed Siraj struck twice in the opening over, dismissing Priyansh Arya (2) and Cooper Connolly (0) off consecutive deliveries. Losing two in-form batters upfront put Punjab under immediate pressure.
Prabhsimran Singh (15) and Shreyas Iyer (19) attempted to stabilize the innings with a 33-run stand for the third wicket. However, once Prabhsimran departed, Punjab’s batting fell apart again. Nehal Wadhera (0) and Iyer followed soon after, leaving the team struggling at 47/5.
The recovery came through Suryansh Shedge and Marcus Stoinis, who stitched together a crucial 79-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Shedge accelerated the scoring with a 27-run over off Manav Suthar, smashing three sixes and two fours. He eventually scored 57 off 29 balls before falling to Kagiso Rabada.
Stoinis looked steady but was dismissed for 40 off 31 balls, mistiming a shot off Jason Holder and getting caught at long-on by Washington Sundar. Holder struck again in the same over, further denting Punjab’s innings. A missed catch off Marco Jansen denied Gujarat an early finish, but Punjab still ended at 163/9.
Gujarat Titans had a shaky start in their chase, losing Shubman Gill (5) early. However, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler steadied things with a 53-run partnership for the second wicket. Buttler scored 25 off 22 balls, while Nishant Sindhu chipped in with 15 off 11.
Rahul Tewatia, known for his finishing abilities, had an off day and managed just 2 runs off 6 balls. Jason Holder, despite his success with the ball, also failed to contribute significantly with the bat, scoring 7 before getting out.
With 11 runs required in the final over, the match hung in the balance. Marcus Stoinis bowled a wide to begin the over, easing the pressure slightly. Arshad Khan then struck a boundary off the next ball, followed by a dot. A risky single kept the strike rotating before Washington Sundar (40*) finished the game in style with a boundary on the fifth ball.
Gujarat Titans ultimately held their nerve in a tense finish to secure a crucial victory.
