IPL2026: Delhi Capitals Stun Punjab Kings in High-Scoring Thriller to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

Punjab Kings slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat in the IPL as Delhi Capitals pulled off a sensational chase to stay alive in the playoff race. Led by Axar Patel, Delhi chased down a daunting 211-run target with three balls to spare, finishing on 211/7 in 19 overs after Punjab had earlier posted a formidable 210/5.

The defeat left Punjab stranded on 13 points from 11 matches, while Delhi climbed to seventh place with 10 points from 12 games, pushing Kolkata Knight Riders down to eighth.

After winning the toss, Axar opted to bowl first on Punjab’s home turf, but the decision initially backfired as Punjab’s openers came out blazing. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh launched a ferocious assault from the outset, racing to 78 runs in just 6.5 overs. Although Prabhsimran departed for 18 off 15 balls, Priyansh continued the carnage with a breathtaking 56 off 33 deliveries, smashing two fours and six towering sixes.

Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer then anchored the innings brilliantly. Holding one end firm till the final over, he produced a classy unbeaten 59 off just 36 balls, decorated with five boundaries and three maximums. Cooper Connolly provided valuable support with a fluent 38 off 27 balls, while Suryansh Shedge’s explosive 21* from only eight deliveries propelled Punjab beyond the 200-run mark.

For Delhi, Madhav Tiwari was the standout bowler with figures of 2/40. Mitchell Starc claimed two wickets as well but proved expensive, conceding 57 runs, while Mukesh Kumar chipped in with one scalp.

Delhi’s mammoth chase began disastrously. KL Rahul (9) and Abishek Porel (5) fell cheaply, while Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs also failed to make an impact. With the innings wobbling badly, captain Axar Patel stepped up under pressure. Partnering with the experienced David Miller, Axar rebuilt the chase with fearless strokeplay.

Axar smashed a stunning 56 off just 30 balls, hammering eight fours and two sixes to register his maiden fifty of the season. Miller matched him shot for shot, blasting 51 from 28 deliveries with three fours and four sixes. Their counterattacking partnership dragged Delhi back from the brink and shifted the momentum dramatically.

The drama intensified in the closing overs as Ashutosh Sharma played a fiery cameo of 24 from 10 balls before falling in the 19th over. However, Delhi kept their nerves intact. Nabi sealed the thrilling victory with a whirlwind 10 runs off just two balls, while Madhav remained unbeaten on 18 from eight deliveries.

Among Punjab’s bowlers, Arshdeep Singh was the most economical and effective, picking up 2/21. Yash Thakur grabbed two wickets but leaked 55 runs, while Marcus Stoinis and Ben Dwarshuis managed one wicket each.

Delhi’s emphatic comeback victory has reignited their playoff aspirations, while Punjab now face mounting pressure after yet another heartbreaking defeat.
