IPL2026 : Brilliant Bengaluru Storm Into Play-Offs After Dominant Win Over Punjab Kings
Royal Challengers Bengaluru sealed their place in the IPL play-offs in emphatic fashion, defeating Punjab Kings by 23 runs after another commanding all-round performance. The victory not only confirmed Bengaluru as the first team to qualify for the knockouts, but also reignited hopes of a long-awaited title triumph for Virat Kohli and his side.
At one stage, Punjab threatened to pull off a remarkable chase through the explosive hitting of Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh. But Bengaluru held their nerve in the crucial moments to close out an important victory.
Punjab’s campaign, which had begun so promisingly with six wins in their first seven matches, has now taken a dramatic downturn. Shreyas Iyer and his men slumped to a sixth consecutive defeat, leaving their play-off hopes hanging by a thread. The result also brought renewed hope for Kolkata Knight Riders, whose qualification chances received a timely boost after Punjab’s loss.
Bengaluru now have 18 points from 13 matches. Although several teams can still reach the same tally, upcoming clashes among the contenders ensure that not all of them can surpass Bengaluru, officially securing RCB’s place in the play-offs.
Kohli, Venkatesh Power RCB To Massive Total
Stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma led Bengaluru in the absence of Rajat Patidar after Punjab opted to bowl first.
Openers Kohli and Jacob Bethell launched an aggressive start before Harpreet Brar dismissed Bethell for 11. Kohli then stitched together another fluent partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, maintaining a blistering scoring rate throughout the powerplay.
Padikkal looked in sublime touch before Brar struck again to remove him for 45. Kohli, fresh from his match-winning century against KKR, continued his sparkling form with another classy half-century. However, former RCB spinner Yuzvendra Chahal eventually dismissed him for 58.
The biggest surprise came from Venkatesh Iyer, who grabbed his opportunity after spending much of the season on the bench. The left-hander played with extraordinary confidence, unleashing a breathtaking array of strokes including reverse sweeps, ramps and scoops. His fearless batting ensured Bengaluru never lost momentum even after Kohli’s departure.
Alongside Tim David, who provided a late flourish with a rapid 28 off 12 balls, Venkatesh powered RCB to a formidable 222. He remained unbeaten on a sensational 73 from just 40 deliveries.
Bhuvneshwar, Hazlewood Crush Punjab’s Top Order
Chasing a daunting target, Punjab suffered an early collapse thanks to the brilliance of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He removed both Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh cheaply, while captain Shreyas fell for just one run. Punjab were reeling at 19 for 3 and never truly recovered from the disastrous start.
Cooper Connolly and Suryansh Shedge counterattacked bravely, scoring 37 and 35 respectively, but neither could convert their starts into a match-defining innings.
When the chase appeared to be slipping away, Shashank launched a stunning assault. Supported by Stoinis, he kept Punjab alive with fearless strokeplay. With 62 needed from the final four overs, the contest was still alive.
That was when Josh Hazlewood produced the decisive breakthrough, dismissing Stoinis for 37 and effectively ending Punjab’s hopes. Shashank continued fighting till the end before falling for a valiant 56 off just 27 balls in the final over.
Punjab eventually finished on 199 for 8, falling 23 runs short as Bengaluru celebrated a memorable victory and a well-deserved place in the IPL play-offs.
