IPL2026 : Marsh’s 90 Powers LSG to Dominant Win Over CSK
Just five days after suffering a heartbreaking defeat despite posting 200-plus runs, Lucknow Super Giants produced a stunning turnaround against Chennai Super Kings at the Ekana Stadium. Riding on Mitchell Marsh’s explosive batting masterclass, Lucknow cruised to a commanding seven-wicket victory. Though the Australian opener narrowly missed out on a century, his blistering knock ensured Lucknow chased down Chennai’s 187/5 with remarkable ease, finishing the job with seven wickets in hand.
Batting first, Chennai struggled to gain momentum on a sluggish surface. The top order failed to make an impact as Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad found stroke-making difficult. Samson managed a scratchy 20 off 20 balls with three boundaries, while Gaikwad contributed 13 from 9 deliveries. Urvil Patel, who had scripted history in the previous encounter between the two sides, departed cheaply for just 6. Reduced to 52/3, Chennai were firmly under pressure.
Kartik steadied the innings brilliantly alongside Dewald Brevis. The pair stitched together a vital 70-run partnership for the fourth wicket to revive Chennai’s innings. Despite discomfort against short-pitched deliveries, Kartik showed grit and composure, targeting the spinners aggressively. He hammered Shahbaz Ahmed for two sixes and two boundaries before taking on the pacers as well, smashing Prince Yadav for consecutive sixes.
Brevis provided excellent support from the other end, striking towering sixes off Akash Singh and Shahbaz. Kartik brought up a superb half-century in 35 balls with a massive six off Mohammed Shami. However, Chennai lost momentum after both set batters departed in quick succession. Brevis fell for 25 while attempting a pull shot off Shami, and Kartik followed soon after for a superb 71. Late fireworks from Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 32, and Prashant Veer’s handy 13 pushed Chennai to a competitive total.
Lucknow’s chase, however, made the pitch appear far easier to bat on. Mitchell Marsh launched the assault immediately, smashing Mukesh Choudhary for three boundaries in the opening over. As the innings progressed, Lucknow tightened their grip on the contest. Anshul Kamboj endured a nightmare fifth over, conceding 28 runs as Marsh blasted four sixes and a boundary in a brutal display of power-hitting.
Neither Spencer Johnson nor Gurjapneet Singh could contain the marauding Australian opener. Lucknow raced to a staggering 86 runs in the powerplay itself, completely overwhelming Chennai’s bowling attack.
At one stage, Marsh looked destined for his second century of the season. But the game witnessed a sudden twist in the 12th over. Josh Inglis fell for 36 while trying to clear the field, and on the very next ball Marsh was run out after a sensational innings of 90 from just 38 balls, decorated with nine fours and seven sixes.
The back-to-back dismissals briefly put Lucknow under pressure. Abdul Samad failed to contribute significantly, scoring only 7, while Nicholas Pooran initially struggled to accelerate. But alongside Mukul Chowdhury (13*) , Pooran (37*) gradually shifted gears. With 24 needed from 24 balls, the West Indian unleashed his trademark finishing power. He smashed Anshul Kamboj for four consecutive sixes in an extraordinary over to seal a memorable victory for Lucknow in emphatic fashion.
