IPL2026 : Tilak Varma’s Blazing Knock powers Mumbai Indians to thrilling win over Punjab Kings
Mumbai Indians had already crashed out of the IPL playoff race and had no chance of finishing in the top four. Yet they stunned Punjab Kings with a thrilling victory, handing Shreyas Iyer’s side their fifth consecutive defeat. Punjab remained stuck on 13 points from 12 matches, while Mumbai moved to 8 points from 12 games, though they stayed in the lower half of the table.
The emotion was evident when Tilak Varma leapt in celebration after smashing the winning six. Chasing a daunting 201, Mumbai looked headed for defeat at one stage before Tilak single-handedly turned the contest around with a breathtaking unbeaten 75 off just 33 balls. Punjab had earlier posted a competitive 200/8, but Mumbai chased it down comfortably with six wickets in hand.
Asked to bat first after losing the toss, Punjab got off to a fluent start. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh played aggressively from the outset. Prabhsimran hammered three consecutive boundaries off Shardul Thakur in the fifth over. However, in the very next over, Priyansh perished while trying to attack Deepak Chahar and was bowled. Chahar celebrated the breakthrough with an animated gesture after having been struck for a boundary on the previous delivery.
Batting at No. 3, Cooper Connolly struggled badly on the tricky Dharamsala surface. Timing the ball proved difficult, and he crawled to 21 off 22 balls before being dismissed. That wicket triggered a dramatic collapse in Punjab’s innings. They lost six wickets for just 33 runs as captain Shreyas Iyer failed for 4, while Suryansh Shedge managed only 8 and Shashank Singh fell for 2. Even Prabhsimran’s impressive 57 off 32 balls came to an end during the collapse.
Under immense pressure, Azmatullah Omarzai launched a spirited counterattack after being drafted into the playing XI. Punjab had slumped to 140/7 before Omarzai revived the innings with a sensational cameo of 38 off just 17 balls, smashing two fours and four sixes. Valuable late contributions from Vishnu Vinod (15 not out) and Xavier Bartlett (18 not out) helped Punjab cross the 200-run mark.
Mumbai’s chase began steadily rather than explosively. Ryan Rickelton looked aggressive, but Rohit Sharma struggled to find boundaries and relied mostly on singles and doubles. Rohit attempted to shift momentum by hitting Bartlett for two sixes in the sixth over.
Omarzai then struck a crucial blow by dismissing Rickelton for a blistering 48 off 23 balls. Rohit departed soon after for 25, while Naman Dhir managed only 9. At 88/3, Mumbai were under pressure before Tilak and Sherfane Rutherford steadied the innings with a 61-run partnership. Rutherford mainly played the supporting role as Tilak unleashed a series of fearless strokes.
The left-hander then stitched together a match-winning 56-run stand in only 20 balls with Will Jacks, who remained unbeaten on 25 from just 10 deliveries, including two fours and two sixes. Tilak’s extraordinary innings featured six fours and six towering sixes, sealing a memorable victory for Mumbai Indians in spectacular fashion.
