Sporting icons : Gordon Greenidge - career highlights & video of the West Indies batting legend

 

Gordon Greenidge was born on May 1, 1951, in St. Peter, Barbados. He was a prolific opening batsman for the West Indies cricket team during the 1970s and 1980s. 


Gordon Greenidge was a right-handed batsman known for his aggressive and powerful batting style. As an opening batsman, he often took the attack to the opposition bowlers right from the start of the innings. Greenidge was particularly strong off the back foot, with crisp drives and cuts being his trademark shots. He was a savage hooker.  He had a solid technique and was equally proficient against both pace and spin bowling. His ability to dominate bowling attacks, especially in limited-overs cricket, made him a feared opponent. Overall, Greenidge's batting style was characterized by his attacking approach, strong technique, and ability to score runs consistently at a brisk pace.


Greenidge's  career highlights include:


1. **Test Cricket Career**:

   - Greenidge played 108 Test matches for the West Indies between 1974 and 1991, scoring 7,558 runs at an impressive average of 44.72. He hit 19 test hundreds.

   - He formed one of the most formidable opening partnerships in cricket history with Desmond Haynes.

   - His highest Test score was 226 against Australia in 1991.

Greenidge had a particularly a great series in England in 1984  scoring over 500 runs in the series including 2 double hundreds . His 214 not out at Lords is regarded as one of the greatest test innings in a big run case of over 340 in the 4th innings  ( video below ) 


2. **One Day International (ODI) Career**:

   - He played 128 ODIs, scoring 5,134 runs at an average of 45.03 with 11 hundreds.

   - Greenidge was known for his aggressive style of batting, particularly in limited-overs cricket.


3. **World Cup Success**:

   - Greenidge played a crucial role in two World Cup victories for the West Indies in 1975 and 1979.

   - In the 1979 World Cup group game against India, he scored a century (an unbeaten  106) to help his team start their campaign on a great style .


4. **County Cricket Career**:

   - He had a successful county career in England, playing for Hampshire from 1970 to 1987.

   - Greenidge scored over 37,000 runs in first-class cricket, including 59 centuries.


5. **Post-Retirement**:

   - After retiring from international cricket, Greenidge has been involved in coaching and mentoring young cricketers.

In 2009, Greenidge was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.


Overall, Gordon Greenidge is remembered as one of the greatest opening batsmen of his era and played a significant role in the dominance of the West Indies cricket team during the late 1970s and 1980s.
