IPL2026: Kolkata Knight Riders Stay Alive in Playoff Race with Gritty Win Over Mumbai Indians

After enduring a miserable run of six matches without a victory, few Kolkata Knight Riders supporters truly believed their team would still remain in contention for the playoffs till the very last stretch of the tournament. Yet, on a rain-soaked evening at Eden Gardens, KKR produced a disciplined and spirited performance to keep those fading hopes alive.

The equation for Kolkata was crystal clear — win the remaining two matches convincingly and stay in the hunt. Cameron Green and company completed half the job on Wednesday with a hard-fought victory over Mumbai Indians, a side already eliminated from the playoff race and playing merely for pride.

Having won the toss, the KKR captain made the bold decision to bowl first under tricky conditions, and the bowlers repaid that faith spectacularly. Kolkata’s pace attack was absolutely relentless, exploiting the damp surface brilliantly and leaving Mumbai’s batting lineup in complete disarray. Whether against pace or spin, Hardik Pandya’s men looked uncomfortable throughout the innings.

The opening partnership of Cameron Green and Saurabh Dubey struggled to gain momentum as Mumbai crawled to just 46 runs in the powerplay. More importantly, they had already lost four crucial wickets, including Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, putting them firmly on the back foot.

Just when Mumbai seemed destined for a complete collapse, Corbin Bosch played a spirited cameo, smashing 32 runs off just 18 balls to provide some late resistance. His entertaining knock helped Mumbai crawl to a modest total of 147/8.

Chasing a manageable target, KKR had an opportunity not only to win but also to significantly boost their net run rate. Finn Allen once again began aggressively, looking eager to dominate from the outset, but unlike the previous game, fortune did not favour him this time. Captain Ajinkya Rahane too failed to accelerate, while Cameron Green disappointed with the bat.

However, veteran batter Manish Pandey rolled back the years with a composed and invaluable innings. With Angkrish Raghuvanshi unable to bat due to an injury, the 41-year-old stepped up magnificently, scoring a crucial 45 and stabilising the chase. Alongside Rovman Powell, he stitched together a match-defining 64-run partnership that guided Kolkata towards safety.

KKR eventually completed the chase without unnecessary risks, securing a vital victory that lifted them to sixth place in the points table. Now, all eyes turn to Sunday’s do-or-die clash against Delhi at Eden Gardens. By then, the Knight Riders will know exactly what they need to qualify.

Will the playoff doors finally open for the men in purple and gold? Or will the dream end just short of the finish line? As Shah Rukh Khan would say — perhaps a “happy ending” still awaits.
