IPL2026 : CSK Dominate MI in Fading IPL ‘El Clasico’, Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
Once dubbed the IPL’s ‘El Clasico’, the clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians has lost much of its old sheen. While both franchises can proudly point to their trophy cabinets, recent seasons have seen them struggle near the bottom of the table. This year has been no different, with inconsistency plaguing both sides. The absence of stalwarts like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma has only added to the decline.
After a one-sided win earlier in the season, Chennai repeated their dominance at Chepauk, outclassing Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai unit in all departments. Led by a composed half-century from captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and a confident knock from youngster Kartik Sharma, CSK cruised to an 8-wicket victory. The win lifted them to sixth place in the standings, keeping their playoff hopes alive, while Mumbai were virtually knocked out of contention.
Having won the toss, Hardik opted to bat first, but Mumbai once again felt the absence of Rohit. Out-of-form Will Jacks was dismissed for just 1 by Anshul Kamboj. A brief recovery came through Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dhir, with the latter making the most of a dropped catch by Shivam Dube to score a brisk 57 off 4 fours and 3 sixes. However, he was eventually dismissed by a stunning catch from Sarfaraz Khan off Jamie Overton.
Rickelton scored 37 before falling to Noor Ahmad, and from there, Mumbai lost momentum. Key players Suryakumar Yadav (21), Tilak Varma (5), and Hardik Pandya (18) continued their poor run of form, preventing the team from posting a competitive total. Mumbai were restricted to just 159. Kamboj starred with the ball, picking up 3 for 32 and moving to 17 wickets in the race for the Purple Cap. Noor Ahmad claimed two wickets, while debutant Ramakrishna Ghosh chipped in with one.
In reply, Chennai never looked under pressure. Jasprit Bumrah struck early to remove Sanju Samson, but that was the only breakthrough Mumbai managed. Gaikwad anchored the chase with an unbeaten 67 off 48 balls, while Urvil Patel contributed a steady 24 before being dismissed by Allah Ghazanfar.
Kartik Sharma then finished the job in style, remaining unbeaten on 54. Showing maturity beyond his years, he accelerated when needed and guided Chennai home with 11 balls to spare.
With this win, Chennai now have 8 points from 9 matches and sit sixth on the table. Mumbai, meanwhile, have just 4 points from 9 games. Even if they win all their remaining matches, they would reach 14 points and still depend on other results. Given their current form, even the most optimistic Mumbai fan would struggle to believe in a turnaround.
