IPL24: Shashank Singh stuns Gujarat with a breathtaking knock, carries Punjab to a thrilling win from jaws of defeat
In a breathtaking thriller at Ahmedabad , Punjab Kings snatched victory from the jaws of Gujarat Titans. The hero of Punjab's victory was uncapped Shashank Singh, who came at number six and played an explosive unbeaten innings of 61 runs in 29 balls. In front of the challenging total of 200 runs, at one point half of Punjab's team had returned to the pavilion at just 111 runs. Dhawan (1) was out cheaply , Bairstow (22) fell after a bright start . Prabsimran (35) looked in great touch till he got out against the run of play . Curran (5) & Raza (15) fell cheaply and the responsibility fell on Shashank to try and get Punjab to an improbable win .
All the veterans were sitting in the dugout. From here, Shashank Singh played a courageous innings and gave Punjab Kings a surprising victory. Shashank Singh made match-winning partnerships of 41 runs in 22 balls with Sikandar Raza for the fifth wicket, 39 runs in 19 balls with Jitendra Sharma for the sixth wicket and 43 runs in 22 balls for the seventh wicket with impact debutant Ashutosh Sharma who hit a glorious and quickfire 17 ball 31 . This is Punjab Kings' second win in four matches and Gujarat Titans' second defeat in four matches.
Shashank Singh, who saved Punjab Kings' honour in today's match, had to face humiliation in the auction held last year for this season. Punjab Kings owner Preity Zinta had refused to add Shashank Singh to her team saying that she was cheated by another player with the same name. The team wanted to buy 19-year-old Shashank, but bought 32-year-old Shashank Singh. But now the way his bat is working, the team management will not regret its mistake at all. Shashank mostly played cricketing shots and it was a marvellous innings full of breathtaking shots all around the ground .
After losing the toss in their home ground, the world's largest Narendra Modi Stadium, Gujarat Titans had set a strong total of 199 runs. Shubman Gill, playing a captains innings, scored an unbeaten 89 off 48 balls with the help of four sixes and six fours in his sparkling knock that held the Gujarat innings . His best shot was a straight six off Rabada which was beautifully hit . He missed the first century of the season by just two shots. He also shared a 53-run partnership for the third wicket with Sai Sudarshan (33) who played another sparkling knock . He shared an unbeaten partnership of 35 runs in 14 balls with an explosive Rahul Tewatia (23 not out in 8 balls) to take the team's score close to 200 runs. Earlier Saha (11) was out cheaply but Kane Williamson (26) played a promising innings before Brar had him caught at point . For Punjab, Kagiso Rabada and Harshal Patel both conceded 44 runs in four overs each. Rabada got two wickets while Harshal got one wicket.
