IPL24: Fraser McGurk's brutal 84 powers Delhi to a tight win over Mumbai Indians
Exactly how many runs are safe in IPL? Every team is looking for an answer to this question this season. KKR lost even after posting 261 runs. Delhi's think tank could not smile with relief despite scoring 257 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday. In the end, however, Rishabh Pant & Co got relief. They beat Mumbai by 10 runs and won the match after a tight chase by MI.
The Mumbai captain won the toss and decided to bowl first. Delhi opener Fraser McGurk was on fire with the bat in the hot afternoon of Delhi. Aussie batter scored 19 runs off Luke Wood in the first over of the match and then slammed 6,4,4 off Bumrah . He took 20 off Hardik's over. At one time it seemed that Fraser will score the fastest century in IPL. He scored 50 runs in 15 balls. The strokes with brute power from his bat was flying to different parts of the ground as he plundered runs at will with his scorching shots over mid wicket & down the ground including off side with very good support from Abhishek Porel who scored a fluent 36 but in the end McGurk was dismissed after scoring 84 runs off 27 balls & this missed his 100 . Two openers were dismissed back to back but the run rate did not stop. The new batters also attacked ruthlessly . Shai Hope (41), Rishabh Pant (29) broke the back of Mumbai bowling. Tristan Stubbs' 25-ball 48 in the slog overs helped Delhi easily cross the 250-run mark as Stubbs launched a fierce assault in the final overs which included some lusty reverse sweeps.
In the current state of IPL, the opposing team is not afraid to chase big runs. If one plays fearless cricket, one can score big runs easily. Mumbai also wanted to start their innings that way. But what the Delhi openers could do, Rohit-Ishan could not emulate. The former Mumbai skipper was stuck for just 8 runs. Ishan (20) and Surya (26) did not get big runs. Hardik Pandya (46) brought himself up a lot in batting on this day. Although he failed with the ball, he showed some old flashes with the bat with sone big hits . In the end Tilak Verma (63) and Tim David (37) tried very hard with some brutal strokes . Although victory was impossible as long as they were at the crease, Hardik's army did not give up hope .
But that was not enough. None of the Mumbai batters could do the impossible. Wadhera and Rohit collapsed in front of the pace pair of Rashikh Salam and Khalil Ahmed. Delhi Capitals won by 10 runs. With 6 points from 9 matches, Mumbai has fallen to the ninth place in the league table. The hope of getting to the playoffs is getting away from Hardik.
25 runs were needed in the final over but Mumbai Indians could manage only 15 . The Delhi quicks picked crucial wickets right through Mumbai innings with Salam & Mukesh taking 3 each & Khaleel took 2 wickets.
Frazier McGurk for his blistering innings was the player of the match .
