West Indies Storm into Super 8, Nepal Knocked out, USA beat Namibia
West Indies booked their place in the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup with a dominant nine-wicket victory over Nepal on Sunday. The win confirmed the Caribbean side’s progression to the next round, while Nepal were eliminated from the tournament.
With this result, West Indies now have six points from three matches. England, placed second in Group C, have four points from three games. Scotland have two points from three matches, while Italy also have two points from two games. Even if West Indies lose their final group match against Italy, their place in the Super 8 is already secured.
For Nepal, it was a disappointing campaign, as they lost all three of their matches. Even a win against Scotland in their final game will not be enough to take them into the next round.
At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Nepal batted first and scored 133 for 8 in their 20 overs. In reply, West Indies chased down the target comfortably, reaching it in just 15.2 overs for the loss of only one wicket.
The match was won mainly due to the all-round performance of captain Shai Hope and Jason Holder. Holder was named Player of the Match after taking four wickets for 27 runs in his four overs. Hope played a steady unbeaten knock of 61 off 44 balls, while Brandon King scored 22 off 17 deliveries. Shimron Hetmyer remained not out on 46 from 32 balls.
For Nepal, Dipendra Singh Airee was the only batter to offer real resistance, scoring 58 off 47 balls. The next best contribution came from Sompal Kami, who remained unbeaten on 26 while batting at number eight.
Meanwhile , Sanjay Krishnamurthi’s explosive unbeaten half-century, followed by a disciplined bowling performance, powered the United States to a crucial 31-run victory over Namibia in a must-win Group C encounter on Sunday, keeping their slim Super Eights hopes alive.
With back-to-back wins, USA ended the group stage on four points and currently sit third behind India and Pakistan. They remain in contention for a place in the next round from Group A, although their qualification will depend on other results.
After opting to bat, captain Monank Patel set the platform with a fluent 52 off 30 deliveries, before Krishnamurthi smashed an unbeaten 68 from just 33 balls to propel USA to their highest-ever T20 World Cup total of 199 for 4 — also the second-highest total by an Associate nation in the history of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
In reply, Namibia were restricted to 168 for 6, despite a strong start from Louren Steenkamp, who scored 58 off 39 balls, including five fours and three sixes.
