T20IWC: Italy attain 1st ever World Cup victory with 10-Wicket Win over Nepal; Sri Lanka Thrash Oman
Italy enjoyed a fairytale start to their maiden T20 World Cup campaign, registering a stunning 10-wicket victory over Nepal. In another match on Thursday, co-host Sri Lanka produced a dominant performance to defeat Oman by a massive margin of 105 runs.
Nepal, who had impressed earlier by putting England under pressure, looked completely out of sorts against Italy. Batting first on the Wankhede pitch, they failed to build any meaningful partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nepal were bowled out for 123 in 19.3 overs. Arif Sheikh was the top scorer with 27 off 24 balls, including four boundaries. Captain Rohit Paudel contributed 23 off 14 balls with two sixes, while Asif Sheikh made 20 and Karan KC remained unbeaten on 18.
Italy’s bowling attack was led by Krishan Kalugamage, who picked up three wickets for just 18 runs. Ben Manenti claimed two wickets for nine runs, while Jaspreet Singh, JJ Smuts and Ali Hasan chipped in with one wicket each.
In reply, Italy chased down the target without losing a single wicket, reaching 124 in just 12.4 overs. The Mosca brothers were unstoppable at the top of the order. Anthony Mosca played an aggressive knock of 62 not out from 32 balls, smashing three fours and six sixes. His younger brother Justin Mosca supported him brilliantly with an unbeaten 60 off 44 balls, including five fours and three sixes. Nepal’s bowlers had no answer to the Italian openers as Italy sealed a historic victory in their very first World Cup match.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka registered a one-sided win over Oman. Batting first, the hosts piled up a massive 225 for 5. Although openers Pathum Nissanka (13) and Kamil Mishara (8) departed early, Kusal Mendis and Pawan Ratnayake steadied the innings. Mendis scored 61 off 45 balls with seven boundaries, while Ratnayake struck 60 off 28 balls, hitting eight fours and a six. Captain Dasun Shanaka then provided the finishing touches with a blistering 50 off just 20 balls, including two fours and five sixes. Kamindu Mendis added a quick unbeaten 19 off seven balls. For Oman, Jiten Ramanandi was the most successful bowler with two wickets for 41 runs.
Chasing a daunting target of 226, Oman never looked comfortable against Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling attack. Mohammad Nadeem was the lone fighter, scoring an unbeaten 53 off 56 balls, while Wasim Ali added 27 off 20 balls. No other batter managed to reach double figures. Sri Lanka bowled Oman out well short of the target, securing a comprehensive 105-run victory.
Mahesh Theekshana starred with the ball for Sri Lanka, taking two wickets for 11 runs. Dushmantha Chameera also claimed two wickets for 19 runs, while Dunith Wellalage, Dushan Hemantha and Kusal Mendis picked up one wicket each to complete a dominant all-round performance by the co-hosts.
