Brook’s brilliant 100 powers England to Thrilling 2 wicket win over Pakistan, Boosting Semi-Final Hopes

After their first Super Eight match against New Zealand was washed out, Pakistan suffered a setback in their second game, going down to England by two wickets in a nail-biting contest. Batting first, Pakistan posted 164 for 9, but England chased it down with 166 for 8 in 19.1 overs, thanks to a magnificent innings from captain Harry Brook, who led from the front with a sensational 100 off 51 balls to guide his team into the T20 World Cup semi-finals. The defeat further dented Pakistan’s chances of reaching the last four, despite an outstanding four-wicket haul from Shaheen Afridi.

Chasing 165 for victory, England got off to a disastrous start. Returning to the playing XI, Shaheen struck early, removing openers Phil Salt (0) and Jos Buttler (2) in his first two overs. Jacob Bethell (8) and Tom Banton (2) also failed to steady the innings, leaving England in deep trouble. However, Brook stood firm at one end, anchoring the chase with remarkable composure. His superb knock of 100 included 10 fours and 4 sixes, and he ensured England stayed on course before eventually falling to Shaheen after virtually sealing the win.

Brook received late support from Sam Curran, who scored 16 off 15 balls, and Will Jacks, who contributed a brisk 28 off 23 balls with one four and two sixes. England lost wickets in quick succession towards the end, making the chase tense, but Liam Dawson (1*) and Jofra Archer (5*) held their nerve to see the team home.

Shaheen Afridi was Pakistan’s standout bowler with figures of 4 for 30, but his effort went in vain. Mohammad Nawaz claimed 2 for 26, while Usman Tariq also picked up two wickets for 31.

Earlier, Pakistan captain Salman won the toss and opted to bat, but Saim Ayub (7) and Salman (5) both failed to make an impact. At 27 for 2, the innings was steadied by opener Sahibzada Farhan and Babar Azam, who came in at No. 4. However, the former Pakistan captain once again fell short under pressure, scoring 25 off 24 balls with two boundaries. Farhan top-scored with a fluent 63 off 45 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes. Fakhar Zaman (25 off 16) and Shadab Khan (23 off 11) added useful late runs with aggressive cameos to take Pakistan to a competitive total.

For England, Liam Dawson was the most successful bowler with 3 for 24. Jamie Overton took 2 for 26, Jofra Archer claimed 2 for 32, and Adil Rashid chipped in with one wicket for 31.
