Delhi Capitals storm into WPL Final after annihilating Gujarat Giants, sets up date with RCB

Delhi Capitals booked their place in the Women’s Premier League final with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants in the Eliminator. Chasing a target of 169, Delhi reached 169 for 3 in just 15.4 overs, thanks to a commanding batting display led by the openers & then  captain Jemimah Rodrigues & Laura Wolvaardt. With this win, Delhi will face Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final on February 5.

Jemimah played a crucial role at the top of the order, scoring 41 off 23 balls, which included four boundaries and a six. She was well supported by Laura Wolvaardt, who remained unbeaten on 32 from 24 deliveries, striking two fours and a six. The chase was set up brilliantly by openers Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma. Lee smashed a breathtaking 43 off 24 balls with eight fours and a six, while Shafali contributed a rapid 31 from 21 balls, hitting seven boundaries. Marizanne Kapp stayed not out on 4 as Delhi completed the chase with ease.

Gujarat’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs. Georgia Wareham was the most successful, picking up 2 wickets for 28 runs, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad claimed 1 wicket for 33.

Earlier, after winning the toss, Jemimah opted to field. Gujarat Giants failed to fully capitalise on batting first, despite a solid innings from opener Beth Mooney, who scored 62 off 51 balls with six fours. The rest of the batting lineup failed to provide support, as Sophie Devine (6), Anushka Sharma (16), Ashleigh Gardner (0), and Kanika Ahuja (6) fell cheaply, leaving Gujarat struggling at 59 for 4.

Georgia Wareham’s aggressive knock of 35 off 25 balls helped Gujarat reach a competitive total, while Kashvi Gautam added quick runs at the end with 18 off 10 balls. Gujarat eventually posted 168 for 7.

For Delhi, Chinelle Henry was the standout bowler with figures of 3 for 35. Nandini Sharma took 2 wickets for 44, while Minnu Mani picked up 1 for 23, restricting Gujarat to a manageable score.
