T20IWC: Proteas Seal Super 8 Spot with Commanding Win Over New Zealand, Markram , Jansen shines
In a high-stakes clash with a Super Eight berth on the line, New Zealand and South Africa locked horns in what promised to be a thrilling contest at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both teams had won their opening two matches, making this a virtual knockout for early qualification. Rising to the occasion, South Africa delivered a composed and clinical performance, defeating New Zealand by seven wickets to become the first team from Group D to book their place in the Super Eight of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
New Zealand had entered the match full of confidence after victories over Afghanistan (by five wickets) and the UAE (by ten wickets). South Africa, meanwhile, had beaten Canada convincingly but survived a dramatic double Super Over against Afghanistan, leaving them slightly under pressure. Winning the toss, South Africa opted to field first.
The Kiwi innings began aggressively but quickly lost momentum. Tim Seifert fell early for 13, followed by another disappointing outing for Rachin Ravindra, who managed just 13 before being dismissed by Marco Jansen. Finn Allen (31) and Glenn Phillips (1) also failed to convert their starts, leaving New Zealand struggling at 64 for 4.
The innings was rescued by a counter-attacking partnership between Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell. Chapman played a blistering knock of 48 off just 26 balls, while Mitchell contributed a steady 32. However tight bowling by the Proteas restricted the Kiwis in the final few overs though Neesham played a handy 23, helping New Zealand post a competitive total of 175. For South Africa, Jansen was the standout bowler with an impressive 4 for 40, while Lungi Ngidi, Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosch picked up one wicket each.
In reply, South Africa never appeared under serious pressure, thanks largely to a masterclass from Aiden Markram. He was given a flying start by Quinton de Kock, though the latter fell after crossing 20. Ryan Rickelton (21) and Dewald Brevis (21) got starts but failed to capitalise.
Markram, however, remained unshaken. The South African captain played a sublime unbeaten innings of 86 off 44 balls, decorated with numerous breathtaking shots yielding eight fours and four sixes Partnered by the ever-reliable David Miller (24 not out), he steered the Proteas to victory in just 17.1 overs. It was a statement innings by the South African skipper .
With this emphatic seven-wicket win over New Zealand, South Africa confirmed their place in the Super Eight. Despite the defeat, New Zealand still have a chance to qualify, but they must secure a win against Canada on February 17 to keep their campaign alive.
