England Survive Scotland Scare to Secure Crucial Win in T20 World Cup, Ireland beat Oman
England’s status as one of the favourites in the T20 World Cup 2026 is increasingly under question after another shaky performance, though they managed to edge past Scotland by five wickets on Saturday to strengthen their chances of reaching the next round.
After narrowly beating Nepal in their opener and losing to West Indies in their second match, England once again struggled but did just enough to get over the line. The win at Eden Gardens keeps Harry Brook’s side firmly in contention for qualification.
Winning the toss, England chose to field first and restricted Scotland to 152. The Scottish innings lacked momentum, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Only skipper Richie Berrington (49 off 32 balls) and Michael Jones (33 off 20) offered real resistance. Adil Rashid was the standout bowler for England, picking up three wickets.
Chasing 153, England were expected to cruise but instead found themselves under early pressure after losing both openers for just 13 runs. Runs were hard to come by, and the chase began to look tense. Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton steadied the innings with a 66-run partnership. Bethell made 33, while Banton went on to score a composed half-century.
England stumbled again after the dismissals of Bethell and captain Harry Brook, but Sam Curran’s calm 28 off 20 balls ensured there were no late surprises. England eventually crossed the line with five wickets in hand, with Banton (63*) & Jacks (16*) finishing with a flurry of boundaries ...though England inconsistent form remains a concern.
Meanwhile Ireland kept their Super 8 hopes alive in the T20 World Cup 2026 with a dominant 96-run victory over Oman in their Group B match in Colombo. After posting a record total of 235, Ireland bowled Oman out for 139, eliminating them from the tournament.
Skipper Lorcan Tucker led from the front with a brilliant unbeaten 94 off 51 balls. After Ireland slipped to 64 for 4, Tucker added a crucial 101-run partnership with Gareth Delany and later a rapid stand with George Dockrell to lift the team to their highest-ever T20I score.
Delany scored 56, while Dockrell smashed 35 off just nine balls. In reply, Oman collapsed despite fighting knocks from Aamir Kaleem (50) and Hammad Mirza (46). Joshua Little took three wickets as Ireland sealed their third-biggest win in T20 Internationals.
