Australia Outclass India women Again as Voll- Litchfield partnership seals series win

India were comprehensively outplayed by Australia in the second ODI at Hobart, as the visitors clinched the series with a game to spare. Playing their first ODI series after being crowned world champions, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side has stumbled badly, suffering back-to-back defeats. Chasing 252, Australia cruised home in just 36.1 overs with five wickets in hand, underlining their dominance.

Earlier, India posted a competitive but underwhelming 251 for 9 after being asked to bat. Returning from injury, Pratika Rawal finally found some runs but consumed valuable deliveries. Her 52 off 81 balls lacked fluency and stalled India’s momentum early on. Smriti Mandhana chipped in with 31 off 37, and the opening pair added a steady 78, but the scoring rate remained modest.

Jemimah Rodrigues endured another disappointing outing, managing just 11. Since her match-winning century against Australia in the World Cup semifinal, runs have dried up for her. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur registered yet another half-century but her 54 came off 70 deliveries, reflecting India’s struggle to accelerate. Deepti Sharma had a rare off day, dismissed for just 1.

The lower order provided late impetus. Richa Ghosh (22 off 19), Kashvee Gautam (25 off 34), and Kranti Gaud (19 off 15) injected urgency into the innings, while Vaishnavi Sharma’s brisk 10 off 5 balls in the final over helped India cross the 250-mark — a total that looked competitive but far from imposing.

Defending 251 required early breakthroughs, and India briefly sensed an opportunity when Kashvee dismissed Australian captain Alyssa Healy for 6. However, that was as good as it got. Phoebe Litchfield and Georgia Voll stitched together a commanding 119-run stand in just 15 overs for the first wicket, effectively taking the game away. Litchfield was elegant and aggressive in equal measure, scoring 80 off 62 balls.

Voll then combined with Beth Mooney to extinguish any lingering Indian hopes. The pair added a rapid 82 runs in just 10 overs. Voll brought up a superb century, hammering 101 off 82 deliveries in a dazzling display of controlled aggression. Mooney contributed a steady 31. Although India picked up a few late wickets, Australia’s victory was never in doubt as they sealed the chase with 83 balls to spare.

With the series already decided, the third ODI becomes a mere formality. However, another defeat would leave the reigning world champions facing the embarrassment of a clean sweep. On points Australia now leads by 6-4 in multiformat series

India’s bowling attack remains a serious concern. Apart from Kashvee, none of the bowlers managed to trouble the Australian batters. Deepti and Sree Charani leaked runs freely, a stark contrast to their World Cup performances where opposition sides had struggled against them.
