India women confidently win 1st T20I vs Australia on DLS 21 run margin

Harmanpreet Kaur and her team had won the ODI World Cup on home soil. Now, with the T20 World Cup scheduled in England in June–July this year, the focus is on capturing that elusive trophy as well. As part of their preparations, the Women in Blue registered a commanding win over Australia. In the first match of the three-match T20I series in Sydney, India defeated Australia by 21 runs under the DLS method.

The victory was built on a superb bowling performance, led by Arundhati Reddy. The Hyderabad pacer rattled the Australian batting line-up with an impressive spell of 4 wickets for just 22 runs. She was well supported by Shree Charani (2 for 14) and Renuka Singh (2 for 14). Star batters like Mooney, Voll (18) , Litchfield (26) , Perry(20)  and Gardner (4) failed to make an impact against the disciplined Indian attack. One of the highlights of the match was Harmanpreet’s stunning catch off Arundhati’s bowling — sprinting backwards and diving full length to dismiss Perry. Australia were eventually bowled out for just 133. Wareham (30) did add a few quick cruicial runs for Australia but none of the batters who got starts played long enough .

Rain played spoilsport even before the toss and continued to interrupt proceedings. However, with a modest target and a strong batting line-up, India had little trouble. The way Shafali Verma was batting, it seemed no target would be too big. She scored 21 off 11 balls before getting out, while Jemimah Rodrigues smashed unbeaten 9 off just 3 deliveries. Smriti Mandhana, on the other hand, played a calmer knock, scoring unbeaten 16 off 17 balls.

India reached 50 for 1 in five overs when rain forced another stoppage. The umpires then revised the target to 29 under the DLS method — a mark India had already crossed. As a result, the Women in Blue won by 21 runs, and players like Richa Ghosh, Deepti Sharma, and Harmanpreet did not even get a chance to bat.

Earlier, India had whitewashed Sri Lanka 5–0 at home. Now, with this dominant performance overseas, Harmanpreet’s team has begun its World Cup preparations in style.
