Wimbledon 2026 – Day 9: Djokovic Wins Epic Marathon, Sinner Cruises, Gauff and Muchová Reach Historic Semi-finals

Quarter-final action began in spectacular fashion on Day 9 of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, producing one of the greatest matches ever witnessed on Centre Court. Novak Djokovic survived a five-hour epic to keep his title dream alive, defending champion Jannik Sinner eased into the last four, while Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchová reached the Wimbledon semi-finals after impressive victories in the women's singles.

The match of the tournament unfolded on Centre Court, where seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic overcame Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime in an unforgettable contest lasting five hours and 15 minutes—the longest men's singles quarter-final in Wimbledon history. The 39-year-old Serbian eventually prevailed 7-6(10-8), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(4-7), 7-6(10-4) after displaying extraordinary resilience and championship temperament.

The opening set alone lasted over 80 minutes before Djokovic edged a dramatic tie-break. Auger-Aliassime responded magnificently by taking the second set and continued matching the Serbian blow for blow throughout the evening. After another tie-break allowed the Canadian to force a deciding set, Centre Court witnessed an absorbing final chapter. Neither player surrendered serve before Djokovic produced his very best tennis in the first-to-10 championship tie-break, winning it 10-4 to secure his 15th Wimbledon semi-final and 55th Grand Slam semi-final. The victory kept alive his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam singles title.

Earlier in the day, defending champion Jannik Sinner delivered another polished display to defeat Germany's surprise quarter-finalist Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Although Struff's booming serve troubled the Italian in patches, Sinner's superb returning and relentless baseline consistency ensured complete control. Despite temperatures touching 30°C, the world No. 1 never looked seriously troubled as he reached his third consecutive Wimbledon semi-final, where he will meet Djokovic in a blockbuster rematch of last year's semi-final.

In the women's draw, Coco Gauff finally achieved her long-awaited Wimbledon breakthrough by reaching her maiden semi-final after defeating fellow American Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Pegula made the brighter start, claiming the opening set with aggressive baseline tennis. However, Gauff gradually found her rhythm, improving her first serve and cutting down on unforced errors. Her athletic court coverage and powerful backhand became increasingly influential as she dominated the final two sets to complete a memorable comeback. The victory made Gauff the first woman in three decades to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals after winning four consecutive three-set matches.

Former French Open finalist Karolina Muchová continued her outstanding grass-court campaign by defeating Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-4. Osaka entered the match full of confidence after eliminating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round, but Muchová's all-court variety, intelligent net play and precise shot selection proved decisive. The Czech secured a crucial late break in the opening set before maintaining her composure during a tightly contested second set to book the first Wimbledon semi-final of her career.

The day's remaining men's quarter-final also reached its conclusion after being suspended overnight because of Wimbledon's curfew. Germany's Alexander Zverev resumed with a two-set advantage and completed a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Czech Jiří Lehečka. The straight-sets success carried Zverev into his first Wimbledon semi-final, completing the set of semi-final appearances at all four Grand Slam tournaments. He will now face American Taylor Fritz, who had secured his place in the last four after defeating Flavio Cobolli in four sets.

By the end of Day 9, the semi-final line-ups had taken shape. The men's event promises two mouth-watering clashes, with defending champion Jannik Sinner facing Novak Djokovic in one semi-final and Alexander Zverev taking on Taylor Fritz in the other. In the women's draw, Coco Gauff will meet Karolina Muchová for a place in the Wimbledon final, while the remaining quarter-finals are scheduled for Day 10. After nine days of exceptional tennis, Wimbledon 2026 has entered its decisive stage with several first-time finalists still firmly in contention alongside one of the greatest champions the sport has ever seen.
