Wimbledon 2026 – Day 7: Osaka Topples Sabalenka, Djokovic, Sinner and Gauff Reach Quarter-finals

The opening day of the fourth round at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships produced a series of memorable contests, headlined by Naomi Osaka's stunning victory over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic's record-breaking march into the quarter-finals. Defending men's champion Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Karolina Muchova also booked their places in the last eight as the race for the Wimbledon titles gathered momentum.

The biggest upset of the day came on Centre Court, where four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka produced one of her finest grass-court performances to defeat top seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6(2). Osaka dominated the opening set with explosive serving and clean hitting from both wings, breaking Sabalenka twice to race through 6-2. The Belarusian responded strongly in the second set, but Osaka remained composed in the tie-break, winning seven of the final nine points to seal her first-ever Wimbledon quarter-final. It was Sabalenka's earliest Grand Slam exit in over two years and ended her run of 14 consecutive major quarter-final appearances.

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic continued his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam singles title by defeating Russia's Roman Safiullin 7-6(6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Safiullin pushed the Serbian hard in the opening set before Djokovic edged a tense tie-break. Although the Russian claimed the third set with aggressive baseline tennis, Djokovic quickly regained control to close out the match in four sets. The victory marked Djokovic's 106th Wimbledon singles win, taking him past Roger Federer for the most men's singles victories in the history of the Championships, while also sending him into a record 17th Wimbledon quarter-final.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner maintained his impressive form with a commanding straight-sets victory over Japan's Shintaro Mochizuki, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. The Italian controlled the contest from the outset, firing a succession of powerful serves and groundstroke winners while allowing his opponent very few opportunities. Sinner's efficient display earned him another quarter-final appearance, where he will meet Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.

Third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime emerged victorious from one of the finest matches of the tournament, defeating Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-1 in a thrilling five-set battle lasting over four hours. After two dramatic tie-breaks, the Canadian dominated the deciding set with aggressive serving and fearless shot-making to set up a blockbuster quarter-final against Djokovic.

Another dramatic contest saw Jan-Lennard Struff reach his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final after Hubert Hurkacz retired because of a hip injury while trailing in their fourth-round match. Struff's remarkable Wimbledon run continued as the 36-year-old became one of the surprise stories of the tournament.

In the women's singles, Coco Gauff finally broke through to her first Wimbledon quarter-final after defeating Switzerland's Belinda Bencic 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-3 in a gripping contest that finished just before the tournament's 11 p.m. curfew. Gauff showed tremendous composure after losing the second-set tie-break, breaking Bencic twice in the deciding set to seal a landmark victory.

Third seed Jessica Pegula recovered from a slow start to overcome teenage compatriot Iva Jovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. After dropping the opening set, Pegula tightened her baseline game and began dictating rallies, comfortably taking the final two sets to advance to another Wimbledon quarter-final. She will meet Gauff in an all-American blockbuster.

Former French Open finalist Karolina Muchova continued her excellent grass-court campaign by defeating defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova in three hard-fought sets. Muchova's variety, deft touch and attacking instincts proved decisive as she reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time, where she will face Naomi Osaka.

By the end of Day 7, both singles draws had taken fascinating shape. Djokovic continued rewriting Wimbledon history, Sinner remained firmly on course to defend his title, and Auger-Aliassime's marathon victory set up an enticing quarter-final against the Serbian legend. In the women's draw, Osaka's magnificent upset of Sabalenka and Gauff's breakthrough run ensured that the battle for the Venus Rosewater Dish remains wide open heading into the quarter-finals.
