Wimbledon 2026 – Day 5: Sinner and Djokovic, Sabalenka March On
The third round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships produced another day of high-quality tennis, with most of the tournament favourites advancing to the second week. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, seven-time champion Novak Djokovic, top seed Aryna Sabalenka, Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula all progressed, while the biggest surprise of the day came when Jan-Lennard Struff stunned eighth seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.
Sinner continued his impressive title defence with a commanding 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Jenson Brooksby on Court No. 1. The Italian was in complete control throughout the two-hour contest, striking the ball cleanly from both wings and conceding only one break of serve. His powerful serving and aggressive baseline play ensured a comfortable passage into the fourth round as he strengthened his bid to retain the Wimbledon crown.
Novak Djokovic was given his toughest examination of the tournament by Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, eventually prevailing 7-5, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4). After dominating the opening two sets, Djokovic briefly lost his rhythm as Rinderknech claimed the third. However, the Serbian regained his composure in a tense fourth-set tie-break to seal victory. The win was particularly significant as it marked Djokovic's 105th Wimbledon singles victory, drawing him level with Roger Federer's record for most fourth-round appearances at the Championships.
The day's biggest upset came on Court 3, where Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff produced inspired tennis to eliminate eighth seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 7-5. Third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime delivered one of his finest performances of the season, defeating qualifier Michael Zheng 7-6(1), 6-2, 6-1. After edging a competitive opening set, the Canadian completely dominated proceedings with his booming serve and powerful forehand to book his place in the last 16.
Elsewhere in the men's draw, qualifier Roman Safiullin continued his remarkable run by defeating Brazilian youngster João Fonseca 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, while Hubert Hurkacz beat Tommy Paul 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-2. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina eased past Márton Fucsovics in straight sets, and Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki advanced after defeating Rafael Jodar in four sets.
In the women's singles, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka produced another dominant display, overpowering former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets to move into the fourth round. Sabalenka's relentless power from the baseline and clinical serving left Ostapenko with few answers as the Belarusian continued her pursuit of a maiden Wimbledon title.
Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka reached the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time in her career with an impressive straight-sets victory over Daria Kasatkina. Osaka served superbly throughout the contest and consistently dictated rallies with her powerful groundstrokes, earning a blockbuster fourth-round meeting against Sabalenka.
American star Coco Gauff was pushed hard by qualifier Claire Liu before emerging victorious in three sets. After taking the opening set comfortably, Gauff lost momentum in the second before raising her level in the decider to prevail and secure her place in the second week. She will next face Belinda Bencic, who battled through another hard-fought three-set victory.
Third seed Jessica Pegula continued her consistent run with another convincing victory to reach the last 16, while teenage American Iva Jovic impressed by eliminating Ekaterina Alexandrova to continue her dream Wimbledon campaign. Former champion Barbora Krejcikova and Karolina Muchova also progressed safely into the fourth round.
With the first week nearing its conclusion, the race for the Wimbledon titles has become increasingly compelling. Sinner and Djokovic remain the leading contenders in the men's draw, although Struff's stunning victory over Medvedev underlined the unpredictable nature of grass-court tennis. In the women's event, Sabalenka, Swiatek, Gauff, Rybakina and Osaka all remain firmly in contention, with the eagerly awaited Sabalenka-Osaka fourth-round clash promising to be one of the highlights of the tournament's second week.
