Wimbledon 2026 – Day 8: Paolini Ends Eala's Dream Run, Fritz, Cobolli Storm into Quarter-finals

The second day of the fourth round at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships produced more compelling drama as the quarter-final line-up neared completion. Italian star Jasmine Paolini brought Alexandra Eala's fairytale run to an end, British wildcard Arthur Fery delighted the home crowd with a stunning comeback victory, while Taylor Fritz, Flavio Cobolli, Elise Mertens and Marta Kostyuk all booked places in the last eight. Play also featured an unfinished blockbuster as Alexander Zverev's match was halted by the Wimbledon curfew.

The headline women's contest saw 13th seed Jasmine Paolini overcome giant-killer Alexandra Eala 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Eala, who had stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek in the previous round, once again displayed fearless shot-making to level the contest after dropping the opening set. However, Paolini's superior experience proved decisive in the final set as she tightened her baseline game, broke serve twice and sealed victory after just over two hours. The Italian reached her second consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final, ending one of the most memorable breakthrough runs of the tournament.

Another impressive performance came from Czech youngster Linda Noskova, who upset Madison Keys 6-4, 7-6(5). Noskova controlled much of the match with her aggressive returning and clean ball-striking, denying Keys the opportunity to dictate with her powerful serve. After taking the opening set, the Czech held her nerve in a tense second-set tie-break to reach her maiden Wimbledon quarter-final.

Belgium's Elise Mertens continued her outstanding grass-court campaign by defeating Marie Bouzkova in straight sets to book her first Wimbledon quarter-final. Mertens backed up her surprise victory over Elena Rybakina with another disciplined display, using her consistency and excellent defensive skills to frustrate the Czech throughout the contest.

Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk also enjoyed a landmark afternoon, defeating American Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4 to reach her first Wimbledon quarter-final. Kostyuk produced an assured all-round display, serving effectively and converting the crucial break opportunities in each set to continue the finest Grand Slam run of her career.

In the men's draw, British wildcard Arthur Fery produced one of the matches of the tournament, recovering from two sets to one down to defeat Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) in an epic lasting more than four hours. Roared on by an enthusiastic Centre Court crowd, Fery showed tremendous resilience after trailing deep into the fourth set before forcing a decider. The final-set tie-break swung repeatedly before the Briton converted his second match point to become the first British men's singles quarter-finalist at Wimbledon in several years.

Last year's semi-finalist Taylor Fritz produced one of the most dominant performances of Day 8, defeating Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik in straight sets to reach another Wimbledon quarter-final. Fritz's powerful first serve and relentless baseline aggression never allowed the unpredictable Bublik to establish any rhythm, as the American strengthened his credentials as one of the leading title contenders.

Italy's Flavio Cobolli continued his excellent season by defeating Australian Alex de Minaur 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3. Cobolli played aggressive first-strike tennis throughout, saving key break points before dominating the second-set tie-break and closing out the contest in straight sets. The victory earned the Italian a second consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final appearance.

Third seed Alexander Zverev appeared firmly on course for the quarter-finals after taking a 6-4, 7-5 lead over Czech Jiri Lehecka. However, with the score at 6-4, 7-5, 3-3, play was suspended because of Wimbledon's 11 p.m. local curfew, leaving the German needing just one more strong set to complete victory when the match resumed the following day.

By the conclusion of Day 8, the quarter-final picture had become increasingly intriguing. Arthur Fery's remarkable run ensured home interest remained alive, while Fritz and Cobolli reinforced their status as genuine contenders in the men's draw. In the women's competition, Paolini's victory over Eala, together with the continued progress of Noskova, Mertens and Kostyuk, highlighted the depth and unpredictability of a tournament that is now guaranteed to crown a first-time Wimbledon women's singles champion.
