Wimbledon 2026 – Day 6: Eala Stuns Swiatek, Rybakina Crashes Out, Zverev and Fritz Reach Last 16
Day 6 of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships produced the biggest shocks of the tournament so far as defending women's champion Iga Swiatek and 2022 champion Elena Rybakina suffered stunning third-round exits. The men's draw, meanwhile, saw top contenders Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur advance, while several marathon encounters thrilled spectators at the All England Club.
The headline result came on Centre Court, where 21-year-old Filipino sensation Alexandra Eala produced the performance of her career to eliminate defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2. The opening set lasted over 80 minutes and featured several momentum swings, with Swiatek holding set points before Eala forced a tie-break. The youngster held her nerve to edge the breaker 11-9 before dominating the second set with fearless shot-making, repeatedly breaking the Pole's serve to complete one of the greatest upsets in recent Wimbledon history. Swiatek struggled to find her rhythm after losing the first set and exited the tournament far earlier than expected.
Another major upset followed when Belgium's Elise Mertens knocked out former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 7-6(5), 6-1. After a closely fought first set decided by a tie-break, Mertens completely dominated the second, frustrating Rybakina with consistent baseline play and forcing numerous unforced errors. The Belgian's superb returning ensured that one of the tournament favourites departed before the second week.
An all-American clash on Centre Court saw Madison Keys battle past sixth seed Amanda Anisimova 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3. After narrowly losing the opening-set tie-break, Keys raised her level considerably, using her powerful serve and forehand to dictate the final two sets. The victory booked her place in the fourth round and kept alive her hopes of a first Wimbledon title.
Elsewhere in the women's draw, Jasmine Paolini progressed with another composed display, while Marta Kostyuk secured her place in the last 16 after a hard-fought victory. Linda Noskova survived an absorbing contest against Sorana Cîrstea, winning 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, and qualifier Ashlyn Krueger continued her dream run by advancing to the fourth round, becoming the last remaining women's qualifier in the tournament.
In the men's singles, third seed Alexander Zverev maintained his impressive form with a convincing straight-sets victory to reach the fourth round. The German controlled proceedings from the baseline, served efficiently throughout and never allowed his opponent to build sustained momentum as he strengthened his credentials as one of the title favourites.
American Taylor Fritz also reached the last 16 after defeating Italy's Lorenzo Sonego 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. Fritz recovered brilliantly after dropping the opening set, dominating with his first serve and powerful forehand to win the next three sets comfortably. The victory continued his consistent run on grass and kept him firmly in contention for a deep Wimbledon campaign.
One of the day's most entertaining contests saw Grigor Dimitrov edge former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3 in a gripping five-set battle lasting over four hours. Dimitrov produced some exquisite all-court tennis, while Berrettini fought back brilliantly after trailing by two sets. However, the Bulgarian rediscovered his best tennis in the deciding set to seal an emotional victory and move into the fourth round.
Another marathon encounter saw Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik defeat American Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3. Bublik's booming serve and fearless attacking style eventually proved decisive as he recovered from losing consecutive tie-breaks to claim victory in five thrilling sets.
British wildcard Arthur Fery delighted the home crowd by defeating Belgium's Zizou Bergs in another epic five-set battle, earning his first appearance in the Wimbledon fourth round. Fery battled through physical discomfort and immense pressure before prevailing in a deciding-set tie-break, becoming the last British singles player remaining in the tournament.
Italian Flavio Cobolli also earned a memorable victory, surviving a four-hour battle against Karen Khachanov in five sets, while Alex de Minaur progressed comfortably to the second week with another polished display.
After six days, the Wimbledon 2026 singles draws have opened up dramatically. The elimination of defending champion Iga Swiatek and former champion Elena Rybakina has transformed the women's title race, while Alexandra Eala's remarkable breakthrough has become the story of the tournament. In the men's event, Zverev, Fritz, Sinner and Djokovic remain among the leading contenders, although the series of thrilling five-set battles has shown that every remaining match promises to be fiercely contested.
