FIFA World Cup 2026- Spain storm into the Final by outclassing favourites France
Spain produced another masterclass of possession football to defeat France 2–0 in the first semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Dallas Stadium, Arlington, and secure their place in the World Cup final. Luis de la Fuente's side completely controlled the rhythm of the contest, neutralising the attacking threat of Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise, while extending their unbeaten run to 37 matches. France, aiming for a third consecutive World Cup final, struggled to impose themselves and were ultimately outplayed by a technically superior Spanish side.
Spain looked the sharper team from the opening whistle. The lively Lamine Yamal repeatedly troubled the French defence with his pace and close control, forcing Lucas Digne and Adrien Rabiot into hurried challenges. Their early pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when Yamal burst into the penalty area and was brought down by Lucas Digne. Following a brief VAR review, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Mikel Oyarzabal showed great composure, beating goalkeeper Mike Maignan with a powerful penalty into the net to hand Spain a deserved 1–0 lead. France attempted to respond through Mbappé and Dembélé, but Spain's disciplined back four, marshalled by Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte, denied them clear opportunities.
France started the second half with greater urgency, but Spain continued to dominate possession and punished their opponents with a brilliantly constructed second goal in the 58th minute. Midfielder Dani Olmo exchanged a quick one-two with Pedro Porro, whose surging run into the penalty area caught the French defence off guard. Porro then unleashed a powerful right-footed finish beyond Maignan to double Spain's advantage and leave France facing an uphill task. The goal was the reward for Spain's relentless attacking movement and intelligent passing throughout the match.
Didier Deschamps introduced fresh attacking options, including Rayan Cherki and Théo Hernández, in an effort to revive France's fortunes, but Spain remained firmly in control. Rodri and Fabián Ruiz dictated the midfield with authority, while goalkeeper Unai Simón was rarely troubled as Spain comfortably protected their lead. Mbappé was well contained throughout, and France finished the match without seriously testing the Spanish defence. At the final whistle, Spain celebrated a thoroughly deserved victory and progression to the World Cup final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final between England and Argentina. France, meanwhile, were left to contest the third-place playoff after seeing their hopes of another World Cup crown come to an end.
