FIFA WC 2026 3rd place playoffs : Saka's hat-trick inspires England to bronze in a record-breaking thriller

 


England produced a spectacular attacking display to defeat France 6-4 in an unforgettable FIFA World Cup 2026 third-place play-off at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, securing their best World Cup finish since lifting the trophy in 1966. In the highest-scoring third-place match in World Cup history, Bukayo Saka stole the show with a magnificent hat-trick, while France fought back from four goals down through a brilliant Kylian Mbappé brace before England finally sealed victory in stoppage time. 


England made a dream start and stunned France inside the opening three minutes. Midfielder Declan Rice collected possession outside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful right-footed strike that flew into the bottom corner beyond Mike Maignan, giving Thomas Tuchel's side an early 1-0 lead. The goal lifted England's confidence, and they dominated possession while France struggled to recover from the early setback. 


The Three Lions doubled their advantage in the 18th minute. From a corner, Rice delivered an excellent cross into the six-yard box where defender Ezri Konsa rose highest to power a header into the net. France looked shaken, and England continued to attack with pace and precision. 


England's third goal arrived in the 37th minute following a lightning-fast counterattack. Marcus Rashford released Bukayo Saka, who cut inside from the left before rifling a superb finish high into the net to make it 3-0. Deep into first-half stoppage time, England struck again. Eberechi Eze threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into Saka's path, and the Arsenal winger calmly slotted past Maignan for his second goal of the evening, sending England into halftime with a commanding 4-0 lead. 


France emerged after the break with renewed determination. Just three minutes into the second half, Michael Olise played a perfectly timed through ball to Kylian Mbappé, who raced clear and calmly finished beyond the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 4-1. Six minutes later, Mbappé turned provider, slipping an incisive pass to substitute Bradley Barcola, who finished low into the corner to make it 4-2 and breathe fresh life into the contest. 


The momentum remained with France, and in the 66th minute Mbappé struck again. Collecting another excellent pass from Olise, the French captain produced a clinical finish from inside the penalty area to make it 4-3. The goal took Mbappé's career World Cup tally to 22 goals, surpassing Lionel Messi to become the competition's all-time leading scorer. France sensed an extraordinary comeback as England suddenly found themselves under immense pressure. 


England eventually regained control in the closing stages. In the 87th minute, Saka completed his hat-trick after confidently converting a penalty, sending Maignan the wrong way to restore England's two-goal cushion at 5-3. France refused to surrender, however, and substitute Ousmane Dembélé scored in stoppage time with a well-taken finish to narrow the score to 5-4. Yet England had the final word. In the 98th minute, substitute Jude Bellingham surged forward before smashing a powerful shot into the net, sealing an extraordinary 6-4 victory and capping a memorable performance. Bellingham's goal was his seventh of the tournament, an England record for a single World Cup. 


The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the England players as they secured the bronze medal with one of the most entertaining performances of the tournament. France's spirited second-half comeback ultimately fell short, and the defeat marked the end of Didier Deschamps' remarkable 14-year tenure as France manager. England departed the tournament with a place on the podium, while France were left to reflect on a thrilling but ultimately heartbreaking contest.
