Joe Root's masterclass levels ODI series as England beat India by four wickets

England produced a composed and clinical run chase to defeat India by four wickets in the second One-Day International at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, levelling the three-match series 1-1. Chasing 234, the hosts reached 235/6 in 44.1 overs, thanks to another batting masterclass from Joe Root, whose unbeaten 99 off 133 balls anchored the innings and ensured England crossed the finish line with 35 balls to spare.

Having won the toss, England elected to field first, and India looked set for a much bigger total after an impressive start. Captain Shubman Gill (31) and Rohit Sharma(26)  negotiated the new ball confidently before Gill's dismissal ended a promising opening stand. Veteran Virat Kohli then joined Shreyas Iyer, and the pair produced the highlight of India's innings with a fluent partnership that put the visitors firmly in control. Kohli looked in vintage touch, timing the ball beautifully through the covers and square of the wicket, scoring 65 off 66 balls with crisp strokeplay. At the other end, Shreyas matched him shot for shot, compiling 66 off 71 deliveries with a blend of aggression and composure. At 178/3, India appeared well placed to post a total in excess of 280.

However, England's pace attack staged a remarkable comeback. Jofra Archer generated extra pace and movement to dismiss Kohli and trigger the collapse, while Gus Atkinson bowled with outstanding discipline and extracted bounce from the Cardiff surface. India's middle and lower order failed to build on the solid platform as wickets tumbled regularly. The visitors lost their last seven wickets for just 55 runs, collapsing from a commanding position to be bowled out for 233 in 44 overs. Archer finished with 3/47, while Atkinson claimed 3/50, his best ODI figures, as England seized complete control of the contest.

England's chase began shakily as India's seamers struck early. The hosts slipped to 60/3, with Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar each making early breakthroughs. Despite the pressure, Joe Root remained calm and methodical, rotating the strike expertly while punishing loose deliveries. Root found valuable support from Will Jacks, who contributed 30 off 44 balls, before Sam Curran added an important partnership that steadied England after another couple of wickets left them at 125/5.

With the match still delicately poised, Root once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the world's finest ODI batters. He guided the lower order superbly, sharing a crucial unbeaten stand with Gus Atkinson, whose enterprising 23 not out off 16 balls proved invaluable. Atkinson struck the winning boundary to seal the victory, leaving Root stranded agonisingly on 99 not out, just one run short of a deserved century. Nevertheless, Root's innings of 99 from 133 deliveries*, featuring nine boundaries, earned him the Player of the Match award and levelled the series ahead of the decider at Lord's.

Best performers

England

Joe Root: 99 (133)*, 9 fours – Player of the Match.

Gus Atkinson: 23 (16)* and 3/50, making a decisive all-round contribution.

Jofra Archer: 3/47, breaking India's momentum with key wickets.

Will Jacks: 30 (44), providing important middle-order support.

India

Shreyas Iyer: 66 (71), anchoring the middle overs with confidence.

Virat Kohli: 65 (66), returning to form with a fluent half-century.

Jasprit Bumrah: Early breakthrough with the new ball.

Gurnoor Brar: 2 wickets, keeping England under pressure in the chase.

England's victory was built on two outstanding phases of cricket—a superb fightback with the ball after India's top order had dominated, followed by Joe Root's masterclass in chasing under pressure. India, despite the excellent efforts of Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, were left to rue another middle-order collapse that transformed a potentially match-winning total into one England successfully hunted down. With the series now tied 1-1, the stage is set for a winner-takes-all finale at Lord's.
